I loved Robin Hood! While there is not one original Robin Hood story, Roger Green looked at all the literature that Robin Hood appears in and combined them into a book, with each chapter a different adventure. I was surprised at how much there is about Robin Hood once it all gets compiled together. I thought the only story was the one made into the Disney Robin Hood movie, with the other Robin Hood movies mere spin-offs. This book, however tells of 24 stories detailing how he became the outlaw Robin Hood, how his companions joined him, how he and Maid Marian met and what became of them, and all the heroic deeds Robin Hood and his companions did. The stories are short (about 15 pages/chapter) and contain lots of humor and varying adventures in them. This is a great novel and I think many of these chapters can also be read to children.

A wonderful collection of familiar and less familiar Robin Hood tales. Green gives the storytelling and dialogue the feel of older English without making the language a barrier to the younger reader. I particularly like the political flavor added by the references to the Norman/Saxon tensions during the time. I very much like the way the collection ends in a not so happily ever after sense.

I'm really glad that I picked it up, and I'd encourage others who enjoy children’s classics to do the same!

Edit: some months later I was still thinking of this book so I'm updating from 2 stars to 3

It's just not well written. The plot is really good, some of the adventures interesting, some of the dialogue sassy. I can see how this must have captured the imagination of people for centuries, I particularly liked the chapter with the old witch and the very ending, but it just didn't have enough description to feel like a really immersive 'I was there' experience which is what I really want from books. I was pleasantly surprised by the very independent Maid Marian too. The writing style lets it down. This is pretty gory- lots of death and punishment and promises of burning men's eyes out and thrashings.

As the title suggests this book is full of adventures, each short chapter a standalone adventure, but with some references to earlier adventures each time. Most of the time it is either robin hood taking part in an archery competition, or getting bored and going into the forest to pick a friendly fight with the first person he can find then to invite him to dinner. We meet all the merry men one by one, and a mysterious black knight (it is too obvious who it is that it isn't much of a reveal). Was a little surprised at all the death in the book though as i thought this was a kids book by the writing style and chapter lengths, but a fair few people are killed off!

I read this aloud with my kids. We all enjoyed the tale of Robin Hood and his followers.
