Fantastic!! Such a sweeping epic... a fascinating time and place. Elizabeth and Nathaniel sizzle right from the first chapter and never get boring. Many times I couldn't put it down. If this was a stand-alone book and not the first in a series, I'd give it 5 stars. The ending started to wobble a bit (don't know really how to explain that further) and, naturally, it doesn't wrap up neatly at the end. Perhaps when I've read them all, I'll need to adjust my ratings. I look very forward to the next one!

(BTW, I loved the brief homage to Outlander's Jamie, Claire and Ian!)

I really liked this series. In fact I have read them twice!

love the characters. great story and I can't wait to start the next one!

I made it more that 75% the way through but ended up DNFing it. I will blame the timeframe when I started this more so than the author because I was very much in a reading slump so I had a hard time finding books that kept my attention. Hoping to give it a second chance the next time I can borrow it from the library.

I have a theory that a book is going to be terrible when the characters insist on saying each other's full names ("Billy Kirby", "Nathaniel Bonner", etc), and this one proves me right (is the author trying to add to their word count or what?) I've heard it compared to "Outlander", but it is not even close to the same league of writing. The main characters were unlikable, I grimaced every single time he called her "Boots", and I just wasn't in the mood for damsel-in-distress fiction. Bah.

Good book! I really liked the brief guest appearance of several characters from THE OUTLANDER SERIES. Can't wait to start on the second book, DAWN ON A DISTANT SHORE.

Interesting premise but tried to do too much and fell short with a lot of the plot. The second half felt like a real slog but also oddly felt rushed and too convenient that everything ended in a neat little bow.

I enjoyed this book more at its beginning than its conclusion after 800+ pages. It was just too long for me. I can see why other readers compare it to Diana Gabaldon’s books. Sexual tension (think Jaime and Claire), wars (British, French and of course, the Scots), colonial NY (without the time travel). Life was hard in the 1700’s and this book had its fair share of challenges for its main characters. Will I read the next book in this series? Honestly, it depends on the number of pages.
