Captured me and held me for a few hours; explored my new-found fear of unexpectedly crossing the threshold of inconsolable depression one day. Sylvia's writing has its own life, reminds me of Margaret Atwood in a way.

A thought-provoking read about being a woman in the 1950s. Full of compelling vignettes about  mental health and struggling to pave one’s own path in this world. It broke my heart to follow Esther’s fight against her inner demons, and this going deeply misunderstood by everyone in her life, solely because she was a woman. Most of all, The Bell Jar is a quintessential read for all self-proclaimed feminists out there.

Like most classics, it doesn’t age well.

I read one chapter at the beginning of the month, picked it back up two days ago, and finished it today. Plath really takes us into the mind of Esther and it feels like we're right there with her, she almost makes sense at some points, but you know she's unwell. That damn raw egg and beef drink she had. The exploration of sex and women was interesting. I really felt for the characters and I enjoy Plath's execution of dialogue. I also enjoy her similes and more flowery passages here and there. I really did like this book.
