I was quickly reminded why I read all of Becky Chambers’ scifi catalog last year! This book realized the multiple perspectives characteristic to the Wayfarers series beautifully, where A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet felt more anthological and episodic than interwoven.

When you get chills as you're reading the last few pages of a book, that's a good indicator that the author has done her job well. Such is the case with Becky Chambers' third installment of the Wayfarers Series.
It is not perfect. There is not enough plot in the first half of the story. Although she constructs a vivid world and introduces us to nuanced characters, I found myself struggling to stay connected to the book.
But the individual threads start to weave together in the second half and the story gathers momentum and emotional heft down the home stretch.
As always, Chambers is thoughtful and kind and accepting. She sees our flaws, forgives us, and encourages to keep trying to be better.

Exploring the Exodan fleet was an interesting idea, but I expected it to intersect more with the stories from the other books. While this one was more similar to TLWTASAP with the multiple perspectives, they didn’t seem to connect until the last third (which made them confusing to follow early on) and I wasn’t particularly drawn to any of the characters. Plus with being the exodan fleet, it meant it was 90% humans, when the interaction of different sapiens was what I loved about the first book.
It was nice to see how the fleet operated!! Particularly how they approached death and sex, and their concept of outsiders. They illustrated a society in relative isolation - it reminded me of the airport settlement in Station Eleven. I was excited when Sawyer was starting to work with the raider crew, but obviously that didn’t last long.I really didn’t like the dip into “murder mystery” around Sawyer’s body! It both cut the plot line short of his conflicted feelings about the group which led to him feeling like he had to secretly keep up a facade of being all in until they retuned to earth, and just didn’t feel like it went too many places.
This book mostly just didn’t speak to me! It read really smoothly, and I got through it really quickly, but I don’t find myself having a lot to say about it.
