While it was very interesting to glimpse the lives of the Exodan Fleet and the issues that have come up all this time after GC incorporation, there's something about this book that makes it feel superficial. The character choices and the dialogue, especially the dialogue, feel pretty canned. It's like in a bid to be genuine and wholesome, they became trite. I was irritated by the soap opera vibe of some of the conversations. And disappointed that a Wayfarers book would be like that.

everything becky writes is so existential and i love it
fast-paced

I really enjoyed these stories and how far they continued to see the “end” of the tales for each character.

The third book in Becky Chambers Wayfarers' universe, this novel explores life aboard the Exodan fleet, where Ashby, the Captain from A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet hails from. This book is somewhat different from the prior two Chambers' novels in that the point of view shifts between several characters, and there is no guiding plot or question that drives the narrative. Instead, it is a snapshot of life aboard the fleet for these characters as they struggle with questions both big and small. Think of this book as a month in the life of a few people aboard the Battlestar Galactica fleet without a Cylon threat and you have an idea of what it's like. I enjoyed the novel and recommend it, but found the diffuse vision and multiple points of view less compelling than the previous two books.

I fully expected this to be a 4 star read throughout most of the book, but that last third was *chef's kiss*. I think it ends up being around 4.5 for me.

I think this entry was the least exciting of the three books I've read, as it was mainly focused on humans. However, I also think that it was the most existential and thought provoking because of the same reason. There were some surprising twists and turns in the story, but I always love how nicely Chambers weaves her plotlines together by the end.

This book, and the other two before it, really just feel like a warm hug.
