“A man was defined not by his flaws, but by how he overcame them.”

I sat and stared at a wall for 20 minutes after finishing this book, attempting to recover. The more I think about it, the better it gets.

I appreciated the slower pace in the beginning as it gave me time to catch my breath after the first Mistborn ending. Character development was strong across the board (even the Kandra whut?) and the extensive political battles set the stage for a wiiild ending. Overall, I had no idea what Brandy Sandy was going to do next which was exhilarating and I’m ready for round 3!

DNF because of library return. Reviewing based on ~70% through, rounding slightly down. I’ll continue the review once my hold comes back around.

The first half was honestly a slog to get through. It was hard because one of the most likeable characters in the first book was not in this one, and that made the start slow. About halfway through the main character committed a cardinal sin of lazy writing (killing a whole bunch of hench men but then not killing the leader because "they're not as bad as them") and that knocked a whole star off for me. The last third/quarter of the book really sped up and was a good, if painful, read. Lots of loose ends, gotta read the third now.

While slow at places, this book is a worthy successor with outstanding world building, an interesting and complex magic system, brilliant sub plots, excellent political intrigue, and compelling characters that you can’t help but fall in love with. An excellent romance subplot and more background on characters from the first book keep the reader hooked and interested throughout the entire story, and the author does a brilliant job maintaining suspense.

Well, Brandon Sanderson sure knows how to keep a story going. It's funny how in the preface he says that this was the story he wanted to tell all along, as if The Final Empire were just a prologue to what he really wanted to write about.

I'm fascinated by his world-building ability, tbh, the lore keeps expanding in some ways I didn't even think about, and now, with that ending... I'm just thrilled to say I can't wait to read the final book of the trilogy and see how it all wraps up.

As well as I'm terrified, this dude doesn't care about my FEELINGS.

I had to sleep on this one before reviewing. The first half moved so slow to me and wasn’t what I was expecting however I do think it truly paid off. We spent enough time with the characters just living and having to make hard decisions that by the end I really did care about their outcomes. I thought I knew what I was expecting in the end, but alas it was devastating in a surprising way which was good but tragic. Both of these books have done a good job at giving you information at a good pace like enough to keep you going but not enough to understand the whole picture which I do really appreciate. Excited to read the next.
