“For a long time, I thought I knew what my calling was. My grand purpose. But when I met Ricki, I knew I was wrong. I was a fool, thinking that I was born to do anything grander than loving her.”
This is one that I soft DNF’d last year when it came out, but I am so glad I picked it back up!! And the audiobook was FANTASTIC!!
This was such a beautiful love story. Ricki and Ezra had undeniable chemistry from the start and I was drawn to them the same way they were drawn to each other. They have the “I’ve waited for you my whole life” type of love and Williams writes their story so beautifully. I never once questioned their love for each other. I just wish we’d gotten more of them falling in love with each other!!
I love how this was a love letter to Harlem in addition to being a love story. I really enjoyed the historical fiction element to this one and learned a lot about the Harlem Renaissance time period!
This is so different from the romances I usually read, but I think I found a new favorite sub genre in romance with magical realism?!

This was beautiful. Incredibly writing and the characters pulled you right in. I wanted more interaction with her family because I could truly picture it all from the start. A beautiful homage to the Harlem Renaissance. I couldn’t put this one down. Beautifully written.

More predictable than I liked, as I saw the ending coming quite early on. Still enjoyable, but....

♾️/5 stars this was perfect. Beautiful, whimsical, sweet, heart breaking and healing. Truly a magical reading experience.
Graphic: Hate crime, Sexual content, Suicide, Terminal illness, Grief
Minor: Drug abuse, Miscarriage
I did not realize that this book had a magical element to it. Which normally I love, but I do not love large age gaps. So this book was largely a miss for me.

Overall, I enjoyed this book! I didn’t expect the genre to be what it is was, but it was a pleasant surprise! It’s starts off pretty slow in my opinion. The exposition is lengthy. But once I got drawn in, it was hard to put the book down. I also loved how funny it was! Truly laughed out loud.
