I greatly enjoyed this book. The world building, political intrigue and the depth of each of the characters truly impressed me. I watched the movie before reading this book, which I usually don’t recommend but I found that the movie helped with understanding the technical terms and jargon that the book throws around

One problem I had with the book however, was the usage of Islamic iconography and terminology in relation to the Fremen. While I’m not certain what the author has said on the subject, I found it to be appropriating Islamic religion which bothered me.

Rereading this 10+ years later, still a 5 star read for me. Because it’s such an epically told story (I mean, the political dialogue and intrigue is just *chef’s kiss*), I’ll even give old man Herbert a pass for some of his eye roll inducing depictions of women

I know many people who love this book and it was very surprising to me just how terribly bored I was reading it. The word choice, the endless dialogues, the descriptions... The whole tone of the book feels somehow condescending too. The world was original and interesting, for sure. I just wish things happened faster or any of the characters were relatable to me. Honestly, I’ve read history textbooks that were more thrilling than this.

Frank Herbert's great talent is to build an enormously detailed world and then just drop it on you. I felt through the first half of this book that I was missing something (and this was my second time reading it, so that's saying a lot, I think). That's not a complaint, just a testament to how real this place must have felt to him.

It is strange re-reading this book as a much older person (I must have read it at least ten years ago). I suspect if I were to read it again in ten years there would be more newness here.
