This has a wild cast of characters. While you can read it as a standalone, I had to make a diagram of who was who because I kept getting lost. After I figured out who was who, I could read it as an standalone. There are just a ton of characters with big personalities (think violet type characters from Pucked).
Overall, though, it was funny and enjoyable and completely entertaining.

I absolutely loved this book! I was so happy to be back in the BTU world. I loved getting to see some of my favorite characters from the series again. And I love Chance and Gemma so much! I enjoyed learning more about her history and why cooking is her passion. I loved getting to see Chance’s possessive and growly side, even if it was when he was being completely ridiculous. I laughed out loud so many times while reading. The sarcasm and banter between not only Chance and Gemma, but also Chance and the guys, was absolutely perfect.
They say there is a fine line between love and hate. Well, in the case of Defensive Hearts, the line is thin as ice. And it all starts when grumpy and stubborn Chance Jenson makes wrong assumptions when meeting Gemma Steele.
He turns the sunny, kind, always-ready-to-help-others Covennette into his enemy. Their banter and feuds are hilarious. She is sassy and snarky. Gemma loves Chance's dogs and treats them as precious babies while practically ignoring the tattooed hottie that owns them. She calls him "Dickhead Daddy."
But the heart wants what it wants, and these two are combustible. As much as Chance tries, he can't ignore his feelings and attraction toward Gemma. He is so much more than the grumpy hockey player everyone thinks he is.
I enjoyed their story a lot. However, it took me a bit to get into it because I wasn't familiar with the secondary characters and kept missing the inner jokes. Shame on me for not starting at the beginning. So, while this book can be read as a stand-alone, it's best to follow the reading order.

Zero stars I'm DNFing the rest of the series
I cannot give this book enough stars! Chance and Gemma are the best enimies to lovers story I have read in so long! The way Gemma loved the puppy’s way more than their daddy. Chance is the master at putting his foot so far into his mouth. However, that man sure knows how to grovel and make sure his leading lady knows she is perfect the way she is. Make sure you check the triggers before reading and be ready for the sexy possesive male we have come to know and love from Alley!
Defensive Hearts is the seventh book in the BTU Alumni series. I did read this book before any other books in the series so it can be read as a standalone. However, there are a lot of characters in this series and their stories of them are a bit intertwined as this is a series about a friend group. Because of that, I would recommend that you read it in order.
This book follows the story of Gemma and Chance. While their banter was entertaining to read about I could go without the whole on-and-off when it comes to their relationship, because in the end it was just annoying. But I did like their relationship as a whole and all those cute and sweet moments that they had.
Overall, this was a fun read and I will be reading the rest of the series in the future.

I really enjoyed this book BUT I struggled to keep up with the onslaught of characters, your thrust straight into a chapter with so many different characters and if you've never read any of the previous books in this series then you're totally at a loss (me) I guess that's partially my fault but if it's a stand alone within a series i still feel like it should be necessary to slowly bring these people into the fold.
I didn't love the way people spoke to each other, the conversations felt very teenager and it was a struggle to get through some of the text messaging scenes.
But overall, if I ignore my own bias I enjoyed it but not enough to re read jn the future.
