Gemma is annoying! Helpless, weak and who gets in her situations multiple times? Who lets anyone get that close multiple times? I think the author destroyed her character! I was so mad at her numerous times! Even when not thinking about certain situations. Just ugh infuriating. However I’m moving on to book 2 just to get loose ends tied!

I love paranormal romances, but this just wasn't it. The main character made me cringe so much, and the narration just wasn't it. The idea is interesting but it was executed poorly. The problem was that the book was so slow, and I was bored waiting for any suspense or action or anything at all. - Respectively my opinion

The concept was a bit better than expected but it tread too close to Twilight! I wish these YA authors would realize that there is more to a description of a human than just eye and hair color! Talk about wrinkles, height, odd tics, something other than hair & eyes. UGH! Also, if a girl is orphaned with only one sibling left, why wouldn't she go to her sister with EVERY question? She doesn't even mention a talk with Tessa (her sister) until half way through the book. Despite the cliff hanger ending, not going to read the next book in the series.

So I'm sitting here with my mouth hanging open after that ending: and reading the teasers for book two just made it worse. I can not believe Trace did that to her; but, I have to believe that there is a reason behind it all. I hope in his twisted mind that he did it to protect her because I think that they belong together. I don't like Dominic either, but I don't think he would let anyone hurt her. For her first book, this author did a great job. I can't wait for book two. Until then...my mouth will be hung open!!!

It can be a bit cliche at times but overall I am really liking it. The plot took a turn I didn't expect and I'm curious how everything unfolds. The characters are complex and intertwined in secrets with one another. Jemma is naive.

Reading reviews before you read the book ... on one hand, it's good to have an idea what people think, on the other hand, spoilers and expectations. Based on many high reviews, maybe I came in expecting too much. I was also waiting for the "shocking twist" at the end (per reviews) so that when it happened, I wasn't surprised.

For me, this was just another paranormal YA out there ... really nothing in it to make it memorable, or even make me want to continue on with the series. It was a little convoluted ... I thought it was going to be about vampires, but then it was more about fallen angels, and then half the characters ended up being something other than human. Add in all the high school drama ... Nikki's insane jealousy was eye-rolling (and unexplained, as was her tryst with Caleb). I just never got around to connecting with the characters or the story.

The Bewitched Reader: Inception (The Marked #1) by Bianca Scardoni

Everyone has told Jemma Blackburn that she is crazy. She saw her father be killed by a vampire but no one believed her. They put her in a mental institution and brainwashed her not to believe what she saw, or so they thought. Jemma knows very well what she saw.
Now she must move in with her uncle in his giant home in Hollow Hill, the town her father tried to keep her away from. She has entered a new world and realises that there are some things happening but that no one wants to tell her what's going on. Besides a new home, she now has to go to a new school and one of the girls is constantly treating her very badly because she thinks that Jemma will steal her boyfriend - that she doesn't even know.
Strange things are unfolding in Hollow Hill and, without knowing it, Jemma is in the core of all of it.
I first started reading this book with reluctance, afraid that it would turn out to be another "Twilight" kind of book - not that I do not like Twilight but that genre has passed its prime - but it actually surprised me. In this story, I found a lot of details that make it very relatable to girls - mostly teenage, but still... - it made me relive things that actually happened to me in high school, and I bet that other people who read this book felt the same way.
The thing that stands out the most is the intertwining of reality and myth and religious aspects. Hearing of the concept you would think that it had a big chance of not working but it actually does, what is amazing. Not only does this book satisfy the "relatability" aspect but also the "otherworldly" and "sort-of-divine" one. They work together.
Like everything in life, not everything is perfect but I believe that the following instalments will clarify the not so well explained aspects of the story but, as the writer gains experience the writing will get better. Besides this, all the characters have a deep complexity that may not be very noticeable but you get to know them layer by layer, and not all at once.
This is a good book for everyone who doesn't mind a little guilty-pleasure reading, something that is not too deep but still has some depth and complexity to it. Even if you do not, give it a chance, it may surprise you.

Finally a good one

I enjoyed and downloading part 2 as I write this. I was hoping Jemma would grow a bad ass backbone sooner, but better than never. The end did shock me but it's not a crazy cliffhanger that pisses you off. Just a big enough one if you like the series, you're ready to continue reading lol. Loved it and hope shit hits the fan even faster now that we're acquainted.
