This book made me realise how utterly helpless a girl can feel. It made me fully understand how poorly some high schoolers treat each other and made me so much more grateful for being in a school where things like that don’t happen.
I loved reading this book. From Maggi's historical problems to Anna's situation, the tight-bound friendships in the novel really made the book stand out. I loved reading it.

This made me feel so uncomfortable and sad. It reminded so much of being a teenager.
Anna Clark has completely uprooted her life, moving to Scotland, changing schools, deleting all her online profiles. And still it isn’t enough. Her past follows were like a malevolent spirit.
But when she finds a strange pendant in the attic she is transported back in time to when women were really burned alive for their ‘sinners’. Suddenly misogyny takes on a whole knew level of meaning in this insightful and thought provoking novel. Exactly what you would expect from feminist and activist Laura Bates.
‘We are the granddaughters of the witches you could not burn.’

I was lucky enough to get a proof copy of this, and I will forever be thrilled. A truly beyond incredible novel, and one I cannot wait to see on shelves. Please please read it!
Switching between a modern-day teenager hiding a secret and a young woman in the past accused of witchcraft as their stories collide, have we really changed over the centuries? Looking at the treatment of women, slut-shaming and more, welcome to The Burning.
I am a big fan of Laura Bates, her non-fiction work is not only incredibly intelligent but sparked a movement for young women. I have read all of her non-fiction and so it only made sense I would request her first YA novel. The story seemed interesting and I was keen to see how the two stories could combine.
Anna has moved with her Mum to a small town in Scotland after the death of her father and a scandal broke at school, but she soon learns you can't outrun your past. While at her new school she researched Maggie, a young woman from the village accused of witchcraft and she begins to see more than she hoped.
This book had a lot of potential, an interesting concept and something a little different. I did feel when reading that things were a little rushed and perhaps there could have been a little more time looking at Maggie as she's a big plot point. That said, I do feel the novel might have been stronger without the history part. It seemed like it was squeezed in and while the idea is excellent, I don't feel it was given enough time.
I gave this 3 stars, for a debut novel it's promising! Worth a read but can be a bit choppy in places.

Good writing with an important message but not for me.
Interesting story, well written and researched but not for me.
I'm a little too old to appreciate the troubles of cyber bullying I think, though this books is important to show people like me why it's important and how it might be stopped / controlled.
The underlying feminism is as important as ever. Why is a many praised for enjoying sex and a woman censured? This is still true and still ridiculous.
For me the supernatural side-story didn't work. It highlighted the constant presence of these issues in our society well, but I just don't enjoy supernatural stories. I feel it would have been better kept as a history project.

As a mother of a young girl who will have the wonders of social media to work her way through, this book was quite a hard read in parts. A little bit of a young read for me, I think it would be perfect for teenagers. I listened to this in less than a day, so a super quick one!
