HOW did I never review this?? I read it years ago, after several students read it. I kept asking them if they understood Cobain's music better after they'd read the book, and they could never give me a straight answer, so I read it, and then got a 'best of CD' and discovered, that yes, indeed, reading the book did bring a richness to listening to his music.
I would share this book by saying he and his uncle actually killed themselves twice. There were so many drugs in his system at the time of his death, they would have stopped his heart eventually.
He seemed to have so much going for him, but he had a history of clinical depression, drug abuse, and a horrible stomach ailment that conspired against him.
I despaired for his daughter...a sweet baby who was born to parents who were well-intentioned (you never doubted his love for his daughter) but incapable of being grownups.
An important book about an important artist

A well-written, carefully thought out description of a man that almost no one, if anyone, understood. Of course, it should be read warily - even ignoring the fact that Courtney Love had a massive input, Cross, for example, describes Kurt's final moments in detail then goes on to add in the fact that even the date was unbreachably vague.
Overall, however, I regarded this as a hard hitting book that handled the sad end of Kurt's life with enough force for impact but not enough for damage.

'the only real illness was the illness he felt in his heart'
Kurt Cobain had a life of sadness and misery which was plagued by drug abuse and depression, but was the life of an amazing and creative man who sadly died too soon. Nirvana is a band that I will always love, with their meaningful lyrics which depict the dark and troubled mind of the brilliant man who wrote them. I was not born when Nirvana were taking over the world and when Kurt Cobain came to his tragic end however their songs, and with them the memory of him, will live on forever.
This book follows the life and misery of Kurt Cobain, and does not sugar-coat his mental and physical illness due to his depression and drug abuse. However, it greatly conveys the turmoil that he felt through most of his life. I learnt things about his life that I did not know - like the fact that he lived in his car for a lot of his adolescent life - and further learnt about things I already knew. This is an aspect that I loved about the book as I felt it truly showed what his life was like and did not cover up some of the darker aspects of it. Some of the happiest moments of his life were also recounted and the happiness he felt in these moments was shown well through the writing style of the author.
The writing in this book is beautiful and the end brought me to tears (even though I already knew how it would inevitably end) because the pain of not just Cobain but his family was shown through the memories that Cross involved in the writing. These memories, which were provided by journal entries and interviews, add an extra element to the writing and I felt this helped build the larger picture of Cobain’s life.
I really loved this book, even though I don’t usually read non-fiction books so this was a pleasant surprise! I think with my love of Nirvana and of Kurt Cobain, it made this book much more interesting to read than most of the other types of books from this genre that I have tried to read. I recommend to anyone who loves, or even just sort of likes, Nirvana.

Very interesting book on one of the most interesting figures in music (to me). I think Cross did a great job portraying his life and making the book a page-turner. Often, biographies tend to get boring, and then I am struggling to get through the pages. This was certainly not the case with this biography. It also gave me insight in the music industry which I did not know much about.
