Sergeant Riley Fisher has been put lead on a case involving a victim that she was previously connected too, however it doesn’t stop there. More victims show up and it appears they are dealing with a cannibal serial killer. There is so many details on this book and I can understand why it has been called a mashup of The Pelican Brief and Silence of the Lambs.
If you are looking for an intriguing, make you think, mystery/thriller involving cannibalism with a potential twist on how this could possibly involve a Governor…this is for you!!
I am definitely looking forward to seeing where Riley goes in the future.
Thank you flatiron books and NetGalley for my gifted copy.

A compelling murder mystery with a genuinely surprising, well thought out twist/reveal. That said, this series has some of the most consistently generic vanilla names I’ve ever seen.

Riley Fisher is a newly minted head of the investigative division of the Black Hawk County Iowa Sheriff’s department when the brutally murdered body of her one-time best friend is found in a corn field. Riley has a lot to live up to as her grandfather (now suffering from dementia) was the well loved and respected Sheriff at one time. Riley is also carrying a lot of baggage, trauma from an incident when she was in high school that was never resolved, a tense relationship with her brother and his ex-wife, and troubles in the department from a fellow officer who resents her promotion. When the case starts to involve more murders and a mysterious link to big Agriculture, and possibly the Gov. of Iowa Riley goes off the grid to pursue leads on her own, partly to protect her past secret and to try and protect those she loves. I love police procedurals, especially those set in small towns and The Fields was a great start to a new series. I can’t wait to see how Riley resolves all the conflicts that still exist in her life.

So good. Never wanted to put it down. Murderous plot with a developing love story. Planned series, which makes it all the better. Would highly recommend to others, especially those interested in psychology and criminology.
Sequel “Original Sins” won’t be out until 2024.

I'm not usually a fan of procedural-type thrillers, but I quite enjoyed this. It definitely does read like an ag-centered Criminal Minds episode.
The biggest drawback was the amount of side-plots happening all at once. It was a bit difficult to keep up with what was happening, especially at the end of the story.
However, one of the main reasons this is getting 4⭐️ is because I couldn't guess how everything tied together or guess the twists/ending. Double-edged sword, I guess.
I don't feel any particular pull from the main storyline to continue on with the series, but I like the relationship between Riley and Logan and would like to see how they progress as partners.
Note: ACAB. The scene toward the end at the school was absolutely f*cked. I'm so tired of hearing or seeing police shoot first & think later, so the depiction of that in a book which I was attempting to read for pleasure was (at best) disappointing. There also wasn't an attempt by the author to show any meaning in that death, and there was no "justice" to be seen. Why include it?

Graphic: Addiction, Alcoholism, Body horror, Death, Gun violence, Police brutality, Outing, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Misogyny, Rape, Sexual assault
Too much info dumping and too many plot / character points that the story began to feel convoluted. Also contained the “bad event from main characters past that every character is constantly alluding to but the reader is left in the dark” trope that i hate so much
