Detective: not really
Puzzle: none
Characters: unearned. We're supposed to feel sympathetic towards the old ladies because they're old and need to cook for themselves. Obviously the fifteen year old is a lying sexual deviant because she has blue eyes. Cool cool cool.
85% of this book consisted of a non-detective looking for clues to a half mystery. He somehow knows the answer to said "mystery" with all of the evidence he cannot find. The last 15% is all of the evidence knocking at his door + a trial that plays out what he knew all along.

Quality-wise this is more of a 4 star book but on a reread I found the smug superiority of the narrative voice in that classist, xenophobic English-of-the-era way so distracting that it really interfered with my reading. I kept angrily disagreeing with the assumptions and offering counterexamples in my head and that kept taking me out of the narrative...
Marion and Mrs Sharpe, who live in a house called The Franchise, are accused of kidnapping and beating a 15yr old girl. Robert Blair, their solicitor, investigates. Enjoyed.

My favourite so far, and not a murder, at all. Two women are accused of kidnapping a young girl who disappeared, but claims to have broken free and got to safety. I think the women are above par in complexity and the case feels pretty novel. Feels much improved over the last.
