Such a fun read!! I love the protagonist, she's awful and amazing. Additionally, it was cool to read a romance story that a) mentions nerdy pursuits while not being explicitly centered around them and b) the characters are not condescending or disdainful of those nerdy pursuits.

8/10 : I’ve totally fallen off of the wagon when it comes to posting my book reviews, so subsequently I’ve got a little backlog… I loved this book back when I read it! It was genuinely funny, & dips into a culture I know little about, where they are heavy on the familial structures, customs & expectations. The protagonist, Andrea Tang, is in her early 30’s, i#a successful lawyer working to become a partner at her firm. Her workaholic life is great, isn’t it? If it wasn’t for her family constantly berating her for being single. I enjoyed this immensely & without wanting to spoil the plot, loved how in the end Andrea realised she could actually do what SHE wants with her life.

I really liked the first 80% of this book, but the wrap-up was poorly executed and unsatisfying.

This was another Beth’s Bookclub read and while I did enjoy it for the most part, I really wasn’t that blown away.

It was a fun, lighthearted read, with some laugh out loud moments early on. However the plot really is predictable. The ending wasn’t a surprise in the slightest and at times I felt the book could have got where it was going much quicker. It did really drag at times.

Andrea is a lovely character and can be quite relatable. She’s funny and sweet but the other characters, and her relationships with them, felt weak and very superficial throughout.

Overall I liked it, but didn’t love it. Would I recommend it to friends… maybe. A 3 (possibly a 3.5) out of 5 stars for me on this one!

Andrea is a hotshot lawyer working crazy hours trying to make partner in Singapore. She tries to outdo her office mate in an ongoing contest to see who can demonstrate that they are the most dedicated.

To her Chinese-Malaysian family, especially her mother, this is insufficient. Despite being successful, her mother wants grandchildren. Her family is very judgemental about her singleness.

I had a hard time getting in to this story which describes lavish locations in Singapore and brandname everything that I just couldn't relate to. It all came across as really materialistic and her mother was so anti- any one for her daughters who wasn't Chinese.

I guess it could be a little bit of sex in the city, Singapore style with her friends, but I just wasn't that in to reading about their fancy partying and expensive handbags.

I listened to this a an audiobook.

This book is for you if you like the chaotic, self destructive, embarrassing vibe of Bridget Jones. I do not. What some folks read as funny and light-hearted, I find predictable and cringey. This book is peak “it’s not you, it’s me”. With a side of casual misogyny. So fun!
