One of my favorite books from Brene Brown. I loved everything about it.
fast-paced
Whew this book hasn’t aged well. Starting off with the good… I think this book can work in the micro. With your family and friend braving is a good idea. Be kinder more opening to listen different opinions, don’t dehumanize people. Where it fails (to me) is trying to make this a general way of life and lot of these self help books miss the mark there. It’s is 2023 ( George Floyd, insurrection, repealing Roe just to name a few, and Capitalism going to crap). Killing them with kindness is not working. Educating people who my not want to be educated is tiring and frankly can put you in danger if you are in a minority group in wrong place. Sadly not everyone is adopting this ideal and radicalization is on the rise. If you are in a thriving moment in your life you probably vibe with this book, but if you are just surviving this is not the solution you want or need.
It might be impossible for me to not love one of BB’s books.

Parts of this.. I was like.. #AGENDA... but other parts I really needed to hear.
I’ve watched Brown’s netflix show and a few of her videos on Youtube, but this was the first book of hers I’ve read. I actually like her better in writing, where she has time to go into the details of the data her organization has collected on shame. In this case, it’s the ways we constrain ourselves trying to avoid shame — the armor we put ourselves in and how to let ourselves out.
“The wilderness” is what Brown calls that unprotected mental space — dangerous, but also vital. She tells us why we’ve walled ourselves off from the wilderness, why we should tear those walls down, and how. Because of this book, I’ve been able to return, slowly, to social media. I’m trying to engage with people more in the real world. I spend more time finding out what I’m like, and showing that.
