Excellent excellent excellent read. This review is long because this series and Samantha Shannon is legit my Roman Empire. I'm eternally grateful that I live in a timeline where I did not have to wait such a long time to read a follow up to the conclusion that was the Mime Order. This is easily my favourite thus far in the Bone Season series.
I'll start off by saying the pacing of this book was easily the fastest and I'm so grateful. The Bone Season and The Mime Order were slower paced books where not a lot happened in how long each respective book was. The Song Rising was the complete opposite experience and it kinda of made me laugh at how even the characters reflected on how quickly everything seemed to change. I felt the anxiety of the syndicate running from Scion, the high stakes risk of capture, and Paige's desperation to get a win under her belt after suffering so many losses. It was a nail biting read and I devoured this book.
My favourite aspect of this book however was the relationship building and character interaction/insight. I felt a emotional connection to each character and their struggles which I had missed in the Mime Order. Nick, Tom, and Maria's stories being given more depth made me love them even more. Though Alsafi was more of a background character, I still was deeply moved by his involvement and belief in Paige at the end. It was also great seeing how Paige's choices carried over into this book eg. Wynn's admission of letting the entire Syndicate rot had Paige "harmed a hair" on Ivy's head. LOVED IT. Paige spent the majority of the Mime Order saying what she was gonna do but in the Song Rising she actually did what she said she was gonna do.
Warden and Paige's relationship has grown on me slowly but surely, which is a credit to Samantha Shannon's writing and intent. The first and second book acknowledges that they do not have the foundation nor the time/place to further explore their feelings, but those feelings are there and they won't go away. I liked how S.S. really explored how Jaxon getting into Paige's head really latched onto the existing insecurity Paige had towards her own feelings and understanding of Warden. I was frustrated but empathetic towards Paige's struggle and ultimate conclusion to distance herself from Warden for the greater good (temporarily). HOWEVER, I was and am eternally grateful that Liss' Aunt helped Paige understand her reading which in turn encouraged her to hold fast to the trust and building relationship with Warden. Though Paige is deeply resilient and clever, the softer and more intimate side of her vulnerability has been really lovely to read.
The scope of this series keeps growing larger and larger and I'm really looking forward to seeing where the Mask Falling (and subsequently the Dark Mirror) brings Paige and Scion next.

That was so good! The first 60% of this book FELT slow; I think it was because there were a lot of investigations and other logistical operations etc, rather than immediately facing the main enemies. But no matter, the latter parts of the book were filled with revelations, actions, high-stake gambits, and other surprises. I've only read the revised editions of this series, but even then, I can feel the quality of the writing continuously increasing throughout. I was initially afraid that this book would be one of those middle-of-the-series books that don't really go anywhere, but I was happy to be proven wrong.
I finally finished The Song Rising, the third book in the Bone Season series, and I had a very similar experience as with the first two! I find that the first 1/3 dragggssss but the final 150 pages were so good I read it in a day!! Possibly it’s my slow reading that affected this haha, this year I’m so slow. But I’m invested in this story, I can’t believe there are going to be so many more books! I’ll read The Mask Falling in June

In typical Samantha Shannon style, I was mildly bored thoughout the first half of the story and then wildly invested for the last half. I definitely liked this one more than the previous one, maybe because it wasn't unnecessarily long.
I really like the worldbuilding in this series. It's so detailed and well thought out, and I love reading about all the imaginary political figures, historical events and real-life parallels.
The plot of this one was also very intriguing, especially towards the end. The whole bit where she I was so sad to find out that because he's one of my favourite characters.
I'm so excited to read the next book, but I've also heard it ends on a terrible cliffhanger and that the next book in the series comes out next year, so I don't know if I want to start it now.
