I have been a fan of Drake for sometime now and I love how she was outside the box with this book. It has raw grit but also passion interwoven through the pages. The mystery. The intrigue. Pretty much everything about this book will have you fully engrossed and wanting answers. The history of Spencer is utterly heartbreaking. You can feel the pain she has radiated off the pages. Then you have Blake as these two are put together to figure out this serial killer.
As a whole, I enjoyed this story. It was something unique and well thought out. It keeps your interest and has you wondering what will happen next as it all plays out. It is a great addition to the writing styles this author already has with her past books!

I couldn’t put this book down!

I’ve always been into murder mysteries and a few have only ever made me feel like I have to keep reading to the end without dull.
I’ll be honest and say that twist at the end was NOT what I was expecting!
This book had just the right amount of suspense, love, mystery and everything in between.
The relationship that builds between all these characters and the plot in general was fantastic.

What do you get when JL Drake writes a book?? You get a FANTASTIC book!
******
Overall Rating: Five, I will never wear high heels again, stars
Kindle Unlimited: No
Standalone: Yes
Steam: 3, it had some lovin' flames
Violence: Well folks there is a serial killer in this book...sooooo
*******
This book starts off with a bang. A gunshot that is! Many gunshots to be exact. Ms. Drake brings us to a beautiful cabin in the woods, and then bam, she wrecks havoc on our hearts! This is where the story begins...

As you read, you will think you have it all figured out...you don't, trust me you don't. Spencer is recovering from a break up and has decided to go live in her parents cabin in the woods. So many memories both good and bad but she needs to get away and the cabin is the best place for her to find herself again.

At one point, Spencer was on top of the world, she had a great family, was a best selling writer and was going places! That is until her brother started causing issues and her family was violently murdered. Now she shy's away from the public eye and ghost writes. She still gets to fulfill her love of writing without the bs that goes with it. Imagine her excitement when she gets a job ghostwriting for an anonymous author who wants a romantic suspense/murder mystery book written! That's right up her alley!

In order to get some background on law enforcement procedures, she teams up with Blake to learn how police investigate. Blake is a hot, single cop that has recently relocated to get away himself. Imagine his surprise when his first case turns out to be a serial killer. Now, Blake and Spencer are chasing down a serial killer and things are also heating up between them.

This story has twists, turns, surprises and holy shit moments. I think Ms. Drake took me down a rabbit hole more times than I can count and every time I thought I had it all figured out....Ms. Drake threw me for another loop. Rabbit holes and loops...

For those of you that know me. Ms. Drake is one of my five unicorn author's. She truly can't write a bad book and everything she writes is magical! This book was no different. This was original, fast paced, edge of your seat goodness that will keep you reading until you get to the end. And don't even get me started on that ending.... WTH?

So once again, Ms. Drake get's all my recommendations and I can't wait for her next book! Don't delay and start reading this today!!!

It's taken me a bit to process this one. I was so pleasantly surprised by the difference in writing that Drake showcases in this book. I have loved everything she's written and I admit I hesitated on reading this book when it came out because I was nervous about how different it would be. I am so incredibly glad I finally took the plunge and read Behind My Words. For sure one of two 5 star reads I've read this year. I have already been raving to my friends and encouraging them to read it.

I always enjoy the care Drake takes with her characters. They aren't just people she writes about- they are people who take residence in her mind and she's able to skillfully put into text their voices.

In this book you'll meet Spencer- a woman with a tragic history. A woman who is incredibly fierce. You will also meet Blake who is the perfect companion for Spencer. The way he allows her to be herself while still being a protector is admirable. The way their story unfolds will keep you entertained and sitting on the edge of your seat wanting to find out who exactly the elusive killer is. If you're looking for a story that can shock you with a phenomenal twist- this is it!

Now I just need to get more of my friends on the wagon to read this one so we can discuss! :)

This was just so confusing the whole way through. I understand that it was supposed to be a mystery but there were so many people mentioned, I couldn’t keep track at all.

I enjoy a good suspense romance, and frequently suspense is not the main focus, it's the romance (duh). But in Behind My Words, the suspense is the focus, but the passion is in there too. The author has written this book with action in the story, mirroring what is going with the characters. Very cool. All of it is tied together makes for an exciting and page-turning reading experience.

Spencer was once a best-selling novelist, but tragedy happens, and now she just highly sought after ghostwriter. She is the surviving member of her family in what is a prominent cold case. A stranger approaches her to write a murder mystery for a very generous fee. She is very involved with the police department of her city as her uncle is high-ranking there. Spencer is smart and witty.

Blake is a new detective, and he's a former SWAT kind of guy from New York City. He's come here to slow down and get away from some pretty horrific old crimes that still haunt him. He's smart and witty.

Spencer and Blake meet, smart, and witty meets smart and witty, and our romance has take-off. Spencer is writing the murder mystery. And a serial killer is loose in their town. Now things are being stirred up regarding the cold case involving her family. The pace of the novel is good; it is not bogged down in extraneous details, which would be easy to do. The book you are reading mirrors the book Spencer is writing. Tension builds both in the murder investigation and in the relationship between Spencer and Blake. There is danger, drama, and some humor. Best of all, the author pulls off a surprise ending that leaves you gasping at the end. I thought, oh my; perhaps we do need a sequel. Nevertheless, if you enjoy suspense and romance, this is a perfect novel to pick up.

I could not put this book down!!! The entire story line and plot was so creative. I really enjoyed the unique nature of this novel, it was unlike anything I’ve read lately! Even though the ”villain” was revealed early, it didn’t take away from the suspense or thrill of this book! I was on the edge of my seat just waiting for the chaos and drama that was sure to come.

Spencer’s entire back story was so captivating. It was both haunting and heartbreaking. Somehow she’d managed to come out on the other side of a profound tragedy with indisputable strength and drive. I was in awe of her through the entire book.

I absolutely loved both main characters. They were sturdy on their own as individuals but so in sync as a couple! I couldn’t get enough of their chemistry! I loved that they found each other during the most inopportune time but managed to still make it work. They understood and accepted each other on a level that no one else could.

That ending... I’ll add more to my review about that after release. I have thoughts upon thoughts!

In all honesty...I dont love police/crime stories from police POV...but this was a little different. I actually did enjoy this one despite the focus on the investigation side of things. The characters were really good and I enjoyed them. This one kept me engaged right from the beginning.

I love a great mystery/thriller with strong characters and a strong and solid storyline like nothing I've read before and this book was right up my alley! J.L. Drake is a new author for me, so I had no idea what I was getting. I was drawn by the beautiful cover, hooked in with the intriguing blurb, and I knew I just had to read it. Behind My Words is great stand alone novel that pulled me in from the beginning. It is filled with surprises, plot twists at every turn and really kept me guessing throughout.

I really enjoyed going on this thrilling ride J.L. Drake took me on and what a jaw-dropping twist at the end!
