This was a pick for our #getthrilledbuddy reads and I was so excited for it. It was really good. Although, it seemed more Sci-fi than horror but it did have Stranger Things vibes with some New York history thrown in.
The social commentary was fantastic. And I think anyone reading this will learn while being entertained. Also, I can see this being a great movie!! It would be amazing so please someone make it happen.

I am not the target audience for this one and know readers who love creepypasta type stuff will absolutely dig this. For me, the book was more compelling before The Echo, when we got to know Raquel's family life, her friendship with Aaron, and the history of the Bronx. It didn't keep me engaged with the game, but that was the catalyst and resolution for the horror/mystery of the story and it was compelling enough to keep me going. Which is to say, I liked the characters but didn't find the plot as interesting. Others will, for sure, and readers who loved [b:The Taking of Jake Livingston|39085455|The Taking of Jake Livingston|Ryan Douglass|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1608739524l/39085455._SY75_.jpg|60654139] will dig this one.

I thought this book was solid. I liked Raquel, and her reluctance to participate in the game was hilarious to me. The chapter titles were amusing, and the history woven into the book was welcome instead of heavy-handed and overshadowing the plot. This book was a fantastic blend of horror, friendship, romance, family, and creepy stuff. And the creepy stuff had lasting effects on the characters that really raised the stakes! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is maybe not into "big" horror, but wants to dip their toe into the genre and / or feel creeped out.
Anyone afraid of insects should use caution before getting into this one.

3.5/5 Stars
After several disappearances in the Bronx, 16-year old Racquel can no longer ignore what is happening when her crush's cousin goes missing. Her mother suddenly falls ill, and the mysterious disease seems to have a link to the disappearances. Charlize and Racquel must work together to beat the disturbing urban legend called the Echo Game.
This was a pretty interesting concept that I was intrigued to know more about when I read the synopsis. I listened to this on audio and think the narrator did a great job with the overall vibe of the story. The world building and pacing were a bit lack luster at times, but as the story progressed I became more invested in the story and the characters. I wasn't the biggest fan of Racquel, she just rubbed me the wrong way and I think she was pretty selfish, especially when it came to how she treated her best friend. I did enjoy the friendship aspect of this book more than the romance, and was glad the romance took more of a backseat. I also like how this had some historical fiction and supernatural elements thrown in as well, as I was expecting only a horror story, but got so much more.
