This is going to be an unpopular opinion, but this book was super boring. Again, I think if I went with a hard copy of this book I’d be able to get through this better. I listened to this and the narrator, who naturally has an American accent, kept speaking with a Russian one for 90% of the book and was very distracting. The “twist” at the end was very predictable and I figured out from a mile a way. The grandfather’s story as the kitchen boy just didn’t make sense so I assumed from early on that he had a higher position than what he claimed. The whole plot was a bit over the top for me. I couldn’t get into this one and just genuinely wasn’t excited to listen to it. The Kitchen Boy just wasn’t the book for me.
I have to admit. Russia doesn't really appeal to me (though oddly enough I once wanted to focus on Eastern Europe as my concentration for international relations). I wasn't thrilled by this task for the College Students Spring/Summer Challenge. (Particularly because I had no desire to tackle Anna Karenina!) But I actually liked this book, especially after the first half. The ending was a good wrap to the book, and then the epilogue will have your jaw dropping in utter confusion. You won't see it coming!

This book was poorly written, suffered from knowitallism on the part of the presumably insufferable author, and had a twist that not only made me groan but want to throw the book into a 1984 like memory hole. One to avoid.
The final days of the Romanovs as seen by one of their last faithful servants, the kitchen boy. Wonderful read with a wonder twist. Truly sad.
I found The Kitchen Boy to be very exciting! From the first chapter through the epilogue, you found yourself anxious, excited and discovering twists in the story.
I appreciate how much of the story and details in the story the author chose to keep historically accurate. It just adds to the tragic realness of the events. I don't know how I feel about the last chapter yet, though.
Life is short. Make the most of it and don't live with regrets.

It is an extremely interesting story but there was too much repetition. It could have been a short story instead of a novel. But there is a great twist to the end that I must admit I didn't see coming. The story would make a great movie.
