Amalia and Zaira were great (and Scoundrel was just adorable), but the absolutely kickass character I admired was La Contessa. A slightly less bloodthirsty Lucretia Borgia, that lady gets shit done.

Je pense que, pour une fois, le format audio a desservi ma lecture ! C'était quand même un livre très sympa, avec des personnages attachants, un univers très cool et des complots politiques bien menés malgré quelques éléments prévisibles

This was a solid 3-star book for the majority, but the end took me by surprise, and brought it up to a 4.

I would have liked more from Zaira's perspective, instead of it all being from Amalia's, but it was an interesting choice, making the POV character NOT the powerful one (well, not the magically powerful one, anyway.)

I'll read the next one in the series.

I have ZERO memory of reading this before.

I really enjoyed this alternate Italian world. The political intrigue and schemes were a nice change of pace from anything I’ve read lately. Zaira’s street wise smarts play well with Amalia’s book smarts. I think I’ll definitely continue on and see what happens next. Definitely some twists and turns that I didn’t see coming.

If you liked the complexities of the Mage/Template conflict in the Dragon Age Video game franchise, then you'll like this book. I have already read another novel by this author and loved it so much that I had to try to find more of her work. I am so glad that I did!

So, there was a lot that I like about this book. The world was cool and different, I liked the idea of the magic system, and the beginning opened for an interesting premise. Yet I felt it was lacking.

There was a lot of potential for character development and growth, but the main character Amalia just felt flat and reactive rather than being active. I kept expecting to learn more about Zaira and thought she'd play a bigger role...and we just never learned about her. She could have had the potential to be a really interesting and diverse character but I never saw potential there.

A fun fantasy novel with a 16th Century Italy vibe, and a fascinating magic syste. Certain people have magic powers, and are controlled by the state in the Raverran Empire. Some of those mages can do stuff like set things on fire, and others can use their magic to build devices like lamps, cannons, distance communicators, etc. Great characters, high stakes court intrigues, and an exciting plot.
