You read too many English novels, and you forget the magic, the beauty that lies within Bengali literature, specifically, classic Bengali literature. Can't begin to explain my gratitude to finally understand how lucky I am to be able to read and understand these books.

I’ve been waning to read this book for over a decade and I hate myself for my procrastination. But, I’m glad I read before it’s too late. I’m glad I’ve saved myself from not watching the movie before I read the book. The author hits you hard and brings back all the childhood memories although I’m not born in the generation, the book was written. I had my moments where I missed my childhood, my moments where I couldn’t hold back my tears. I think the book should be read in a week or two to enjoy and feel the forest. At times, the author went over board describing the forest but it still was a great read and I feel young readers should be encouraged to read it.

If you enjoyed Satyajit Ray's magnificent Apu trilogy then you are highly likely to fall in love with this (which from memory forms the core of the first 1 1/2 films). It is a similarly completely immersive and spellbinding experience, although the poverty and in particular the plight of women, are even more front and centre in the novel. Not that it is depressing - although it shies away not one bit from the negatives it still manages to conjure a wondrous, joyful, and vibrant world.
