I really wanna say "Game of Thrones, but also dinosaurs", which is more of a negative for me, really wished freakin' dinosaurs were more of a factor for the narrative, instead they are mostly just mounts.
Moderate: Rape
This was really more like 2.5 stars but Goodreads has no in-between. This is a horrible mini review to write because the concept of this book is fantastic. The start of the book is fantastic. Like can't put it down great and then it just wasn't. By half way through the book it became apparent to me that reading it had become a chore. I think Joe Abercrombie and Scott Lynch have ruined me for standard fantasy because I just got bored.
Take away the dinosaurs and there was nothing new here. The book reads like a standard fantasy novel. I didn't really care that much about the story and after awhile I didn't care that much about the characters. The coolest part was the dinosaurs but except for a few scenes they might as well have been horses. This book made me break my 100 page rule where I put a book aside if it doesn't catch me because it did. The writing is good but ultimately it just fell short. Maybe as disappointed about a book as I have been in some time because I really wanted to like it more.

Tl,dr: If the idea of dinosaur knights excites you, the you’ll enjoy this book. It’s not the most amazing writing, but it sure is fun!
The good: it’s medieval war…with dinosaurs! Need I say more? But I will:there is also a subtle sci-fi-esque plot, which is only hinted at in this book, but it has me itching for more. There is only one main woman character but she is relatively capable, and the men have no problem with tears, poetry, and in some cases, sleeping with other men.
The less good: 1) The writing is…fine. Milan tends to overuse his descriptors, and falls into the same trap as a lot of fiction authors: using too many words for the same thing. A dinosaur will be referred to by their proper name, and a few other nicknames, and it’s hard to keep track of. Sometimes it’s easier just to call a T-Rex a T-Rex. 2) In keeping with the genre, it’s very…shall we say “sex positive”. The ruling culture apparently often goes around in little more than a loincloth and some straps. To his credit, there are times when Milan describes the appearance/outfit of the men more than the women, but it generally leans toward describing the form of the women and their clothing (or lack thereof). It’s not a huge part of the book, but it is there. Lots of characters are very into sex, and there are three sex scenes, in various levels of detail, one of which is a rape.
But overall, if the premise interests you, it’s some cheap fun.

I wanted to like this book, I tried to like this book but in the end the endless politics killed it for me. The dinosaurs were always in the background. Also the endless exclamations about class were grating. I don't expect a princess to think of a servant's feelings, there is no need to state that repeatedly. The art in the book was nice and even after reading I can say I still love the cover.
Not feelin it. Also the dinosaur yelling its own name? Also "Shiraa's roar knotted their nutsacks..."
Picture a feudal society with a figurehead ruler, religious wackos, a bunch of bisexual knights, and, oh yeah--most knights still ride horses, but the best knights ride dinosaurs. It's a great setup and the mythology is intriguing and the people's cultures are varied enough to keep things engaging (despite the highly derivative nomenclatures). Unfortunately, despite the fact that I was super excited that a lot of the warriors are women and women are respected, Milan chose to have his female main character raped for no reason other than to show her weakness, and lost me as a reader of his future books. I'd recommend it to fans of high fantasy looking for something strange built in the standard storylines.
