I love this one, y’all.
Opposites attract in this gem from Lauren Blakely. What starts as an impulsive decision to get married in Las Vegas as a one-night adventure between two best friends gets drawn out into a marriage of convenience that leads the two friends to realize they have been in love with each other all along. Don’t you just love romance books???
At a glance:
- Dual POV
- Sports romance
- Best friend / best friend’s sibling (He’s best friends with her brother, too.)
- Opposites attract
- Marriage pact
- Let’s get married on a whim in Vegas!
- Marriage of convenience extended for work purposes
- Only one bed
- Mental health rep (anxiety)
- Banter
- Dogs
- Toys
- 🔥🔥🔥
- Oh my goodness, I have been in love with her this entire time! (I just love those revelations.)
There’s so much to love about this one, but a few of my favorite things are how these two understand each other and take care of each other, how they both have growth arcs in the book, and how we get to spend more time with other favorite Lauren Blakely characters along the way.
If you’re an audiobook listener, I highly recommend popping on some headphones and settling in with the duet narration by Vanessa Edwin and Robert Hatchet. They perfectly capture the playful, steamy, and vulnerable moments between Maeve and Asher.
I received advance copies of the ebook and audiobook from the author. All review opinions are my own.

I thought this was a great rom-com audiobook that’ll make you laugh, swoon, and maybe even tear up a little. Narrated by Vanessa Edwin and Robert Hatchet, this story about Maeve and Asher is peak "friends-to-lovers" energy. What starts as a wild Vegas night turns into a fake marriage, but honestly, the vibes between these two are chef’s kiss from the jump.
This book has all the spice, but it also brings in some emotional depth, especially with Asher’s mental health journey. I loved how it wasn't just a cute romance – it also felt real, showing how vulnerable and complex these characters are. Asher and Maeve are a power couple in the making, and you can totally feel their chemistry.

Vanessa Edwin nails Maeve’s bubbly, funny side, but also handles the serious moments effortlessly. Robert Hatchet is perfect as Asher, balancing the funny, flirty guy with his hidden feelings. The pacing is on point – not too fast, not too slow – so it’s an easy listen that’ll keep you hooked from start to finish.
Overall, The Proposal Play is a cute, spicy, and just a little predictable (in the best way) romance that’s a total vibe. If you're into friends falling in love and a little bit of hockey, this is your next audiobook. It’s a total must-read if you want something fun and heartwarming with a side of aww.

At this point, this entire series is five stars. So far, I have enjoyed every single book and the couples are to die for. I don’t know what Lauren Blakely is doing to her books, but I swear every book just gets better and better. The fact that each character has a specific act of kindness is killing me… like Wes washing his hands before looking for Josie… or Asher sending gifts to Maeve every anniversary week.
I really enjoyed the aspect of them starting as friends and how they slowly fell for each other through the years without realizing it. I really enjoyed how they both complimented each other's personality, especially when they had a chaotic adventure in mind. They felt like true partners in crime and I really enjoyed seeing them realize their feelings for each other.
This book follows the third girl-friend of the group, Maeve, and her best friend and hockey player, Asher Callahan. They have been best friends for ten years after meeting in a grief support group. In an event to save Asher’s reputation, Maeve bids for him in an auction, winning a trip to Las Vegas, where they both get married.
They plan to get divorced once they get back, but things start getting complicated when they go viral for doing an act of kindness and Maeve lands her dream job for a Mural.

If you love:
-Friends to lovers
-Hockey Romance
-Marriage pack (or marriage of convenience)
You will love this book.
Lauren has a formula for her hockey romances that I usually enjoy, however this one missed the mark a little for me.
I enjoyed the book, I love the banter and the friendship between the main character. I love how they were both so into each other but they were worried about ruining the friendship.
I also love have Lauren writes strong and independent FMC and Maeve was just that.
Asher was THAt guy with all the acts of service and how much he spoiled her.
Why only 3 starts if I loved it so much?
Well simple because it was 500 pages for no reason at all. It was dragging my feet to finish because we already knew they loved each other and they were going to end up HEA so why drag it out🤷🏽♀️
Also.. it was never explained how they have been friends for so long so there was also that.
Thank you so much for the ARC.

3.5 ⭐️, rounded up for Goodreads
I enjoyed this hockey romance from Lauren Blakely. I listened to the audiobook version and the narrators did a great job! haven't read any of the other books in this series, but I didn't feel lost at all as we got into the story so this can easily be read as a standalone.
Asher and Maeve have been best friends for years. When a night in Vegas turns into an unplanned wedding, things start to get complicated for these two.
Asher and Maeve were great characters. Their friendship is cute and the way things developed was believable. They're both supportive of each other and take the time to listen and show they care. The moral of this book is that women just want a man who pays attention and shows it. Asher is definitely that guy.
I deducted stars mostly because I was annoyed with how things played out at the end. I don't understand what the issue was, things seemed to be blown out of proportion, and I was annoyed with the response from one of the side characters.
If you like friends to lovers, fake marriage, and athlete/artist romance then this book is for you!
I received an eALC of this book from Hambright PR. This is my honest review.

You would think after—I don’t know how many books I’ve read from Lauren Blakely, but it’s a significant amount—that I would know what I’m getting into but I always forget. Extremely sexy, extremely swoony, and a whole lotta heart.
I absolutely ADORED Maeve and Asher. They were the best of friends that turned into the best of lovers. A raw, realistic, tension-filled romance from start to finish. A slow burn, sensual, sweeping marriage of convenience that made me SO HAPPY in the end.
ugh, I’m feeling cute aggression. This story made my teeth ache and I FLOVED it. I didn’t know I needed this one but I did. Lauren Blakely is a favorite author. No doubt about that. Her organic plots, mild humor, and forever love stories will never get old.
NARRATION:
I absolutely LOVED these two narrators together! Vanessa’s voice was hypnotic. She made me feel like we could be best friends. And Robert’s voice? Deep and mesmerizing.
Their performances were spectacular and the production was flawless! Have I found two new favorite narrators? Quite possibly because I’m obsessed!

Friends to lovers is probably my most favourite trope that ever could be.
Asher & Maeve’s friendship is the goal of being friends for a decade they support each other. So, it wasn’t a big shock when Maeve came out to support Asher. You can see their bond right from the get-go. Even though he is also best friends with her brother it wasn’t ever an issue. The brother was supportive of both and didn’t want to see either of them get hurt.
For me, I wasn’t sure about the marriage thing, but it worked. I kind of wished they didn’t constantly bring up that it was for show or that it was temporary. I know they were just justifying it to themselves, but it was a little over the top. But once they accepted it and were all in, I loved how they fell in love like it was a foregone conclusion.
Low angst even though you would have thought, ‘Oh the drama’ that couldn’t be farther from the case. One of the best things about a Lauren Blakely book in my opinion.
Vanessa was the perfect Maeve her voice gives off the creative vibe I feel from Maeve.
Robert is newer to me, but I love how he brings Asher to life. I can’t wait to pick up more books by these two.
P.S. I can't wait for the next one in this series!!! I have a feeling it's going to be my favourite.
