Wonderfully illustrated, though the stories were gruesome. Anthony Bourdain is truly missed.

Turns out Bourdain was a bit of a weeb. Maybe not full-on, but between this book and Get Jiro it's safe to say he was a big admirer of Japanese culture at least.
I hate to be blunt, but if the art wasn't so good then this book would suck. The stories are neither scary nor compelling, and it's fairly short. It establishes a narrative framework at the beginning but then never returns to that - just sort of ending after a series of short ghost stories instead. None of them are particularly memorable, although some of the panels of art are. Haven't made any of the recipes but I'm sure they are good.
A cool book for any Bourdain fan to have on the shelf, but it's not a great piece of graphic literature by any stretch of the imagination.

Horror book? Check! Has Yokai? Check! Graphic novel? Check!
It had a so many things going for it for me and it just missed it's mark. Maybe because the short stories were not long enough to get me fully invested. I can not put my finger on it exactly. My favorite story out of all of them was the "Salty Horses". Nice, creepy, and the horses reminded me more of a nightmare. Still this is short so give this a try! ~Ashley

The six sub-stories were slight, to me, and not terribly scary. The images seemed to embrace gore for shock value and not to a storytelling end. The recipes at the end were a fun touch, but, I mean, one of them was for meatballs. Bourdain allegedly finished this before his death, but it feels like maybe it hadn't met his final approval yet. Maybe I'm being too harsh, and shock-horror has never been my thing, so YMMV. But for me, I was hoping for a bigger, better send-off from this larger-than-life personality.
