I have watched many episodes of Devlok with Devdutt Patnaik and the book is based on that show. I like to hear his interpretations of and researches on (mostly Hindu) mythological scriptures. He explains his research on mythology quite simply and logically. You have to have an open mind about the book because most of the topics are associated with different deities and focuses more on the philosophical meaning of the stories rather than take those stories literally. It is a great read and I would recommend this book to people who are interested in mythology and tolerant with different interpretations of mythological stories.

It is a book of Mayavadi Philosophy, where people assume the great Vedic literature to be simply stories for entertainment and lessons.

Many things although, explained with confidence were wrong.

The author has made best attempt to merge the Puranic tales and Vedic Wisdom with Mayavadi Philosophy and the text seems to be of high enlightenment, although it lacks absolute knowledge.

Moreover, the chapter Gita was completely out of track and flooding with flaws.

Three stars, for because this author thinks a lot!

Finished this book with mixed experience. I have read many books on Hindu god/goddess before and so I was not surprised to read of stories this book says. But still it refreshes the knowledge and adds more to it. Many stories and new, many beliefs are explained with logical ends and many questions are answered. However one thing the book says repetitively is, we should not take mythological stories as it is said but should find it's lesson. At many places author has very nicely explained how religion and belief system are changing over the years with changing social structure and our lifestyle. I found questions regarding colors, food, stars every interesting and enlightening. Thanks to Devdutt for telling us about things people believe in different regions and letting us know about how versitile Hinduism is. This book is definitely a very good read for those who are seeking more knowledge of Hindu tradition and who's into mythology.

The book is based on the popular show ‘Devlok with devdutt pattanaik’ on epic channel. This book is the narrative of the same tv programme. It is written in the conversation format. It includes various topics from across the different mythologies.

It details the myths around the re-telling of epics of India. How they differ with the difference in geography, time, & culture.

All in all, this book is a must-read to people interested in mythology & daily life insights from it.

I have given 3 star rating to this book not because I did not find it interesting or informative enough but I sort of found it a little repetitive, this could be because I had been reading too many of his works at a stretch or the content really was repeated a bit here I can't really be sure, I guess I'll have to annotate and get back to this review

Having read the previous books of the author, this one seems like a summary of the previous book Myth=Mythya in a Q&A format.
The show form which, the book buys its writings was much more appealing due to its visual contents. The missing of usual Devdutt drawings are also missing in this book.
But, if you are a beginner in respect of Hindu mythology and want to know its bits and part and pieces that comprises to form the full part, then this book is for you. This book is also for the audiences of the show, who wants to have that knowledge contained with them. Its a summary in its core, but with the evergreen lucid flow of the writer who pens it with a contemporary view, so that you can lend your eyes and do darshan from more than one perspective.
The explanation are simple. The content engaging and relating to each another. The book is also divided into particular chapters, as per the episodes which have added to its plus-points. You can start at any point and have the hang of reading it.

A note to Devdutt fans who have read his earlier works : You can avoid this one, if you want anything new. Otherwise, you can collect it if you want to have the collection of author's works. This would be a recommendation for a handbook of Hindu religion and mythology, like that of Myth=Mythya.

A good read indeed.
