Joshilyn Jackson is a very reliable and solid author for me - I always know that I'm going to get an enjoyable story with family drama and mysteries, and a pretty satisfying ending. That might sound like lukewarm praise, but I keep seeking out her books so she's doing something right.

Joshilyn Jackson is a master story teller. I love the flawed characters in this book. Their flaws don't stop them from seeking to find their best self.

I like Joshilyn Jackson. I like her poetic but unflinching writing about the south.
That said, I didn't think this was her strongest work.
Most of the characters seemed fairly one note and predictable. And the primary plot points, a life defining struggle for the protagonist, didn't ring true for me.
Still, it was a reasonably compelling story, with a musicality of language, and I was never tempted to put it down and move on to something else.

Review coming for the TLC Book Tour.

The Opposite of Everyone introduces us to Paula, a tough, single divorce attorney who is estranged from her mother. One day, she receives a piece of correspondence from her mother that turns out to be life altering. We slowly learn Paula's backstory, revealing the causes of the underlying dysfunctional relationship with her mother . . .which turns out to have a huge influence on her present day situation.

Jackson sure can tell a story. She's excellent at doling out just the right amount of information at just the right pace and at just the right time. Her characters are all interesting - - neither too good, nor too bad - - just human. This story is one of family dysfunction, but Jackson throws in enough original tidbits to keep things interesting.

All in all, a good, interesting read - - not a literary masterwork, but definitely a story that sustains your attention all the way until the end and builds momentum throughout.
