Wow- glad my friends convinced me not to give up in this series. The writing, the relationships, the character development, the emotions. All so good
These book covers are atrocious but the content is unreal
I read this while living and working in Italy during the summer of 2022. Having read My Brilliant Friend twice and then carrying on to the next in the quartet was a difference experience once I had the geographic and cultural reference point of living in Italy. Ferrante's gift is being able to present complex human relationships and emotions in such relatable characters. Not necessarily relatable for their life's circumstances or paths but recognizable for the envy, love, anxiety, pride, shame, and loyalty they feel toward one another.

MY GOD this book stressed me tf out!!!!! jokingly i told friends this is the university novel because it reminds me of who we were in college, unformed and insecure and PETTY. it was an intense experience and i relived a lot of my unrequited love (and subsequent angst) in lenu's narration, though of course ferrante and her translator, ann goldstein, work their magic and depict all these base emotions with elegance. the way the words land is just astounding. i had to keep pausing from sheer FRUSTRATION but what a ride this was.
