I loved this book! I was looking forward to reading about the building of the Panama Canal, an event I knew little about. I wasn’t expecting to be drawn in by the various characters Henrique’s created so vividly. I finished the book in two days and was sad to see it end. Thank you to Harper Collins and Thoughts From a Page for the advanced copy!

This novel is pretty epic and covers an area and time I’m not super familiar with. While I eventually enjoyed all the different characters and stories it took a while to keep them straight in my head. Shorter chapters could have been helpful here. Still wonderfully written. I look forward to more from this author.

3.5 stars.

This was an interesting style of book, one that I don't typically pick up. Literary fiction isn't a genre I commonly read from but I was interested in this book and decided to pick it up. I wasn't disappointed but I think that it is just not my type of genre. It kind of reminded me of House on Mango Street.

The most difficult thing about the book is the way that the point of view would change within a sentence. Listening to the audiobook, I would be so confused as the POV would change 10 times or more per chapter. If it the book was structured more like vignettes, it would feel less shocking as a reader but because it just randomly changes, it removed me from the story every time and was sometimes hard to re-immerse myself in the story.
