I absolutely loved the queer exclusivity in this novel! It was very refreshing to have a queer woman of color as the protagonist, and even better: she discovers the drag king scene! Not just drag queens (though she becomes friends with a lovely trans drag queen on her journey) but KINGS! This sub-set of queer ballroom culture is so overlooked, it was very uplifting to see.
Nima is an honest, if sometimes irksome narrator. She is VERY shy, and even as a shy kid in my teen years, I was still Begging her to just push a little bit harder to get what she wanted. But, that being said, her character arc is dynamic and whole, filled with hardships and twists, and difficulty, but by the end she was better for it all.
If you like the drag scene, slow building confidence, and strong characters: read this book

This was slow to get into but when it hit its stride was an enjoyable read that kept me jumping through the chapters. The characters were quite endearing (and cringey), but altogether wholesome and real.
I enjoyed listening to this, but I think I would've preferred reading a physical copy!!

I wish there was more snarky humor and more of Nima-the-drag-king who finally is figuring herself out. And more of the amazing D-D, and why wasn't Nima's dad at her drag show? He would have loved to see her come into her own!! Charles is redeemed, and I am still not sure the purpose of the bully (without more development, the storyline just seems out of place). Not as much of a payoff in the end, but as a light, fun, representative read, it was satisfying. Just wanted a bit more.
