I knew that the book was way darker than the musical, but yeah… they took a LOT of liberties when writing the musical.
Regardless the sense of fury toward injustice is something that I think a lot of burnt out millennials and Gen Z can relate to.

Beautifully written although I found it too long and boring. Part 1 alone goes on for way too long, I really didn't care about baby Elphaba.
My main problem is that a load of nothing happens. It feels uneventful due to it's slow pace even though plenty happens.

A garbage book with a garbage story. It denies the reader of any fantasy and drags the characters through the mud. Skip the book, see the play (which is DIAMETRICALLY different from the play). Seriously, don't read the book before the play because you'll expect awful things to happen that never do and the play is much better, if you haven't read the book already to taint your imagination.
So much darker than what I expected, and really not in the modd for that kind of reading !
medium-paced
I knew that it was going to be nothing like the musical, but god DAMN did they truly just take some light inspiration from this book and ran with it!
This book hurt at points and it was radically political, sexual, hateful, pitying, and devastating at times. Elphaba, as with all marginalized characters, deserved better, but she also wanted her life to be be the way that it was. She hated people, but loved animals. She believed in freedom and justice and she fought her whole life. I have a new respect for her and the story, but I also don’t know if I want to continue with the series.
I also think it’s so funny how G(a)linda is barely in the story compared to her level of importance in the musical. She became the type of person I expected her to be: a “good person, but one would never give up her creature comforts for the sake of justice or others. A lot of people in middle and upper class society of today are that way and maybe we need more Elphabas…
We’ll see what the future holds.
