I was so surprised to find out the dark side of the Three Pines. The author crashed my heart to describe that character as dark as this
I took a small break from Chief Inspector Gamache, but when this title popped up on an Audible sale, I was sucked right back in. (Finished this one and have already started book #6).
I didn't get as much of my Three Pines friends in this one, but despite that it was immersive. The story that weaves through the book (about a boy who tries to steal from the Mountain King) was as good as the book itself! I was dying for each installment (and feel like I didn't get all of it - much like the book itself. It feels...unfinished. Luckily from reading other reviews, I heard more of the story is revealed in book 6.).
Another nugget of extra goodness is Ruth's poetry. In Louisiana, great customer service often involves "Lagniappe," a little something extra, be it a sample or some other little giftie. I feel Ruth's words are a Lagniappe added to each book. I love her and her pet duck.

Excellent from the first page to the last ! My halfway point thru the Gamache series! Team Inspector Gamache!
While many I know said this was their favorite of the series. I found it hard to get into and did not love the end. Looking forward to the sixth though.

This book in the Gamache series has a particularly strong plot, especially as we get to the end of the book. What keeps me coming back is the development of the characters in Three Pines, and this story pushes them along.
First I will say that I Love Ruth! She is one of my all time favorite characters from any series ever. Without any spoilers I will just say this story made me sad for the village characters we have grown to love.
