I read this already knowing I couldn't get into Hemmingway's style, having attempted some of his classics. I was disappointed in the "portrait" of Paris, which is less a portrait than a rough outline with some random, inconsequential bits that added nothing. Things like the names of streets and the vague description of coffee (repeated multiple times), made me feel more like I was looking at the faded memories of another person, focused on details that only mattered to the individual.
This also keenly put me off re-reading anything by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Hemingway is known to be a concise writer. It did my heart good to read paragraphs where his thoughts were all jumbled on the page, and to see the many rewrites that would take place before he found the exact words to try to convey his thoughts. The careless ending of his first marriage saddened me. I found the observations through his eyes of some of his famous contemporaries to be interesting.
A Moveable Feast is at times very relatable (particularly with his assessment of certain people like Stein and Fitzgerald, which I found really interesting and real, and also his description of winters in Austria) and at other times vaguely pretentious, but that has more to do with his no nonsense, stream of consciousness style, which is of course more prevalent in this book than any of his others. I liked the bit early on about writing one completely true statement to jumpstart his work.
I read the restored edition edited by Hemingway’s grandson Sean, which included all of the minor edits and unfinished sentences and even things he had crossed out. It made me feel like I was invading his privacy at times which was weird but still a very cool experience.

A beautiful remembrance of the people who shaped Hemingway's life in Paris in the 1920s. His ability to examine his love for and disappointment in people like Ezra Pound, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein makes for beautiful and insightful reading. But it also gives the reader a glimpse of important literary history. The sections devoted to Fitzgerald in particular are incredible. Knowing that Hemingway took his own life before ever publishing this makes the book all the more thought-provoking.
