I have been meaning to read this book for a long time and finally had the time to do it! I really, really enjoyed this book. It was so informative historically but didn't bore me. I was always interested in what was going to happen next and was also surprised by how little I really knew about the Japanese part of WWII. It is truly miraculous that so many survived such horrible circumstances...or that they even made it to Japan at all. I was shocked by how many soldiers died during training during those years! I am so glad I didn't have a son during that time, I can't imagine the stress and sadness. I highly recommend this one!
The story is amazing, but the writing is average. Some of it seemed sensationalist and perhaps that the author was leaping to certain conclusions.
Wow, what a life! Tough to hear what happened to POW's, but a good book.
I've always been interesting in WWII, but I haven't previously read a lot about the Pacific theater. This book coincided nicely with my rising interest in historical books about Japan and China. It also meshed tangentally with my interest in Holocaust memoirs, because a lot of the tortures that Louie went through were very similar to what was being inflicted on the Jews, Gypsies and others by the Nazis in Europe.
So intense!!! Really good. Hard to listen to at certain points, but its definitely worth the read.

Loved this book. It was beautiful, devastating and hopeful. As I began getting into it, I wondered how boring it would be to spend so much time on Louie floating in the ocean for example, but as I read, I would not have changed a thing. The moments were delicate and still gruesome and intimate. I very much enjoyed this read. I also appreciated that Hillenbrand didn't just deal with ordeal as it happened but took the time to tell the entire story, offering a glimpse of who these men were after they came home and it took for some of them to "survive" their new life back in the United States. Well done.

This is not normally a book I would gravitate towards but I received it as a gift and wow... What a story. Very inspiring but also very sad in parts. You can tell that the author did a tremendous amount of research but the story still flows and moves at a quicker pace than you would think. Highly highly recommend.

An interesting biography on a man who lead an extraordinary life. I don’t know exactly what I was able to take away from it though other than “what a cool story”. The Olympics were cool and the survival at sea was cool. But the POW camps and brutal treatment took up most of the book. I know that’s his life story but the book didn’t leave me completely wowed. A perfectly fine book, nothing more than that though
