This book is sooooo good. It tells the story in such a human way while also being historical. The story itself is unbelievable and harrowing. Highly recommend

I waffled between 3 and 4 stars because I didn't care for the ending. But, I reminded myself that it is a true story so there was no other way to write it.

I loved seeing a side of WWII that I had never heard about. Japan's involvement in the war for me always started with Pearl Harbor and ended when we dropped the atomic bombs on them. I had never wondered exactly why we chose them and not the Nazis but now I understand a bit more. What Japan did both to the Chinese people and the POW's they captured and tortured was as bad as what happened in Nazi Germany with all the horrors of the Holocaust.

This story of Zamparini both before, during and after the war was an amazing tale I couldn't put down. I listened to this on Audible and the only detractor I found was that there were so many secondary characters that I had trouble keeping most of them straight. The ending was too religious for my liking - in a tent revival no less - and after the vivid and minute level of details we had of all the suffering Louis went through I felt it was summed up far too quickly which left a weird taste in my mouth afterward. While I understand and applaud his efforts of banishing his demons from a horrific war experience, I didn't like how the author chose to gloss over the ending. However, I'm of the minority I know after our book club discussion so don't let that stop you from reading this amazing book.

I'm not usually a fan of biographies and feel there is an overabundance of WWII stories, and so I'm not sure why I started reading this story! However, I'm glad I did, I found it quite fascinating. The events Louie had to endure are truely astounding.

An amazing book that EVERYONE should read. It is so easy to forget events in the past and the sacrifices that have contributed to our freedom today. Unimaginable what these men went through for the greater good of humanity. Parts of this book will leave you in tears and other times you are laughing and full of joy. It truly is a must read and most definitely worth your time.

Reads like a grandpa telling you a story about his friends and early years.

This is the biography of Louis Zamperini - child delinquent, teenage Olympian, and finally airman on a doomed flight during WWII which left him stranded on a raft in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and drifting toward Japan.

It is the story of one man, but also many men who were POWs during the war. It is the story of endurance. It is the story of forgiveness. It is a must-read for anyone who thinks war is the answer.

I loved the story of this incredible man and cannot believe all he went through and survived in his life. I didn't really enjoy her style if writing though. Seemed very jumpy.

If I were able, I would give this book a 4.5. Since I’m not able to, I’ll just give it the 5 stars. Why? I was hooked immediately and really didn’t want to put it down. The ease with which I read it and the endearing story of Mr. Zamperini made me want to continue reading.

Unbroken tells the unflappable story of Louis Zamperini. From his early crime-laden, juvenile years to his energetic golden years, Zamperini lived and loved life. A celebrated runner and past Olympian, he lost his dream of returning to the Olympics when he fought and was captured during World War II. Living as a POW took a toll on Louis but his luck and spirit never died.
The story tells of his adventures throughout his life.

The only thing I did not like about this book was the abrupt ending. The Epilogue is drawn out but it manages to wrap up many details left hanging during the story.

I would recommend this book to just about anyone as it is written for a general audience.
