The lives of women across several generations told by one who 'got out' and then 'went back'. The voices of this country are important and need to be heard. While this wasn't a flawless telling it was beautiful and an important narrative to be added to the fabric. This is a quick book that will give you a slice of another perspective. Worth the read.

Being from Lee County, I enjoyed the stories of the mountains and the area. However, a lot of the book is more of her life and not as much the women of the hills. I get they shaped her, but I would have preferred to hear more of the stories of Owsley County and not her time at Yale and how it was an elitist community. I loved reading about the mountains and her adventures of Cow Creek and how they shaped her family. The book got too political at the end for me. I would have rather heard her stories of her visits with Aunt Ruth and less about Trump and the liberal views. Overall it was an ok read for me.

I liked this book , then I hated it, then I liked it again as I read it. It takes a few tangents, starting out, as the title suggests, as a tribute to Hill Women. It then spends a bit of time as a commercial for Berea College, and then as a resume/"look how great I am" of the authors, before getting back to the main gist of the story.
The main part of the story is very good. I can relate to the story because of my own Appalachian roots. It made me feel good that Cassie, in the end, was working to help struggling families.

This book was very heartwarming. These were incredibly tough, extraordinarily loving ladies who not only made the Appalachian mountains home for Cassie but also taught her she could move those mountains if she put her mind to it.
