To Cage a God

To Cage a God by Elizabeth May had a brutal first scene which definitely hooked me to the story.

It follows two sisters, Galina and Sera who have been in hiding for four years after their mother was executed. Though this sounds horrific, their own mother tortured them, carving their bones and summoned and trapped a God within them.

Sera’s God was a failed experiment and it requires her own sacrifice to use its powers.

Galina’s God was carved with more success.

Together they plan to overthrow an oppressive, destructive Emperor who revels in the misery and torture of those around her.

‘Let my face be the last you ever see. I will burn myself into your memory.’

There was some unusual language used and some fairly obvious things happening in the story but I did enjoy it. The magic system and how God’s became intertwined in the beginning confused me a bit. However, I really enjoyed Vasya and Galina’s relationship.

If you enjoy F/f relationship, snarky husband and wife … a whole lot of stabbing and a bit of spice you will enjoy this!

Thanks you to netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the disability rep in this book, and I did really like the characters (well, the main women at least), but something about this book just didn't quite hit. But I still enjoyed reading it!

Synopsis: dragons are grafted to the bones of the ruling elite but they use their gifts to further colonisation. This is the story two commoners with dragons in their bones and their mission to overthrow the ruling class.

Now that sounds great right??

This was the most clichéd YA book I have ever read (even though it's not YA). Cliche after cliche stacked atop one another so high they might just fall. From stabby FMC to "talk murder to me it turns me on" MMC (omg I've just realised this sounds like Poppy and Castiel? Casteel? Cas? Eurgh.) to a (generic) Russian inspired world (that has NO world building AT ALL) to murderous emperors to star crossed lovers (one almost literally arranges the stars [flowers] in the sky)... I actually started skimming this halfway through just to get it out my rotation of current reads.

I loved The Falconer series way back when and decided to give this a go. Such a disappointment 😭

If you read my review and still want to read, mind the TWs!

I was a little nervous because of the Leigh Bardugo comparison but I was SO invested

I might come back to this one but it wasn’t good. Which I’m sad about because I was really excited for it.

Felt like you start off completely mid way through no world building or political background. Literally got to chapter 16 and was still like Wtf is going on? Characters motivations are not clear and the characters I encountered weren’t likeable or relatable.

Disappointed to say the least.
