Really interesting read but some bits were not for the weary - far northern life is not for me!

I had no idea what to expect but I absolutely loved it! Really amazing writing about autonomy, fear, masculinity, trust, bravery and more. Juuuuust missed out on 5 stars since some I wish she took more care to give background or autonomy to the immigrant wives and fiancées and that whole trade. Idk exactly how to have done it better but there was room for some more hard truths towards the annoying Norwegian johns/fiancées/female companion seekers since sometimes those men spoke down on the women or their culture. Everything else was a 10/10 in my book

And it wasn't what I expected. She's a musher, so I thought it would be more about dog sledding. NOPE. It was basically a love letter to Norway. Which, fine, but Norway isn't even the Goddamn Ice Cube referenced in the title. It was OK. Not great.

This was absolutely nothing like I expected. A story of stories that have everything to fo sho with one another and nothing to do with one another. I wish there was an underlying theme which is the only reason I feel like I can’t give it a higher rating. A memoir of stories and experiences that you’ll possibly enjoy reading.

I couldn't get into this.
I was expecting a story about a young woman, overcoming many problems until she found herself in the Arctic, becoming a dog sledder, and gaining joy in life.

This wasn't that.

It was a meandering story of a young woman that spoke about how a lot of men made rude comments about her body, looked at her boobs, and didn't take her seriously. And she kept going back to them. Not to confront them or stand up to them, but simply to feel if she felt any different.

I don't know. This was a weird one. I tried to look at it outside a male perspective, but I kept hoping she would say something to them. Or fight back. She did not.

She also just spoke about people in the terms of nicknames without ever explaining why they were called that. I couldn't get into it and skimmed the last bit.

A gripping and inspiring memoir
