There were solid chunks of this book that I really loved; Blair’s interactions with the townsfolk she got to know over the course of her stay in Mortenhals, the formal but loving relationship that she had with Arild, the old shopkeeper, her time spent learning to train a small team of sledding dogs and mushing out on remote, desolate fjords. Things like that. On the other hand I found myself losing interest when she would invariably return back to an analysis of past love interests or young flings. I understood why she spent as much time as she did focusing on these aspects of her life, as they were part of her development into adulthood, but I couldn’t help but feel a little less interested in that aspect of her story.

"Huh," said Arild, handing me the last sweet roll. "We'll say at the shop there were at least two hundred."

I took the roll and agreed.

Such a needed contribution to the realm of wilderness novels. Loved that she was able to still explore herself / find connections despite what felt to be a sea of assault and male invasion at every turn. So glad I found this after giving up on the all too common “man tries to conquer Alaska” story, this was much more reflective and real and tbh more raw coming from a woman who must also face assault fears on top of everything a man ordinarily fears about the wild.

I guess I was expecting more of an adult, non-fiction "Julie of the Wolves." I liked parts of it, but I skimmed a lot. I also wish it came with a trigger warning about the sexual assault stuff.

Meanders and jumps around at times but overall a really reflective story about Braverman’s relationship with the North.
