First off : I want to live/work in a lighthouse library in the Outer Banks (with a resident cat), too. Reality be darned...
I didn't get into this particular story so much, and pegged the killer (and motive) before the victim's body was even cold. I lost a bit of steam later on and ended up skimming the middle portion. However, it is the first in a series and I really enjoy this particular setting. All of the library employees are likable characters (aside from Louise Jane -- who is just plain...ugh... argh... infuriating to read! The character combination of her and "Poor" Andrew reminded me of the Siamese cats from The Lady & The Tramp), while it seems like a majority of the "community" are rather stuck up and annoying --- but I expect return characters will probably get fleshed out as the series progresses. The Lighthouse Library series will remain on my TBR.

Over all, a fun read. Louise Jane was BEYOND obnoxious, and so many times during the story I just wanted to give her a firm kick in the backside. Lucy, I enjoyed over all, though her naivety got a bit annoying at times. Some parts of the story felt a bit stilted, but I'll chalk that up to a first story in a series. I've got the next two books in the series to read, and I hope that this stilted feeling wears off as the author finds her groove in this series.
Cute cozy mystery. I listened to the majority of this on a day full of driving and found it to be funny and charming. Actually did not guess the killer at all and really enjoyed getting to know the characters and town. Will be reading the next one in the series!
A slow start for me, and I almost put it down, but read some more and finally got hooked in. Turned out to be an enjoyable read.
There just doesn't seem to be much of a story here. I felt like there was a lot of detail about the main character's poor self image, what people were wearing, what people were eating ... A bunch of details that *might* help to paint a picture, but were really unnecessary. There was so much emphasis on those unnecessary details, I think the author forgot to write the actual mystery. IT seems to be the newer trend to cozy mysteries. Honestly, if I'd started reading cozies with books like this, I wouldn't have continued to read them.
I didn't get very far in this book at all, and I really like to give books 50 pages to open themselves up to me. That would have been 14%. But there was already fatphobia and why fucking must we. And I was bored. So a no thanks from me.
Minor: Fatphobia
While the author clearly has never worked in a library, her imagined library within a lighthouse on North Carolina's outer banks has amusing characters and an interesting setting. While I also guessed the murderer, I found this a good one of its kind, and have checked out the next two in the series. Jenn McKinley's library mystery series is a little more realistic in its library management, but both series give you entertaining characters, a touch of romance, and a lovely seaside setting. Check it out -- would you let a policeman get fingerprint powder on a 1st edition Jane Austen book? Under what circumstances?

It was... fine. It's one of those stories that carries you along in the flow of its tide. It's fun and enjoyable but as soon as the wave crashes to the shore, it ebbs away, all but forgotten.
It's not you, though, it's me. I need to step back from the genre. Too much cozy, not enough substance.

I am generally a fan of cozy mysteries but this one was a miss.
Although only published in 2015, it felt very out of date. I expect there to be pieces of unbelievability in these types of books but there was too much in this one and it took me out of it.
I won’t be reading another in this series but I will give other cozy mysteries a try!
