This book is a unique, bone-chilling thriller. It’s so graphic and real, it’s hard to believe this is a YA book. The part where Jess crawled in her father’s grave almost made me vomit and cry at the same time- WOW. I don’t think I could’ve handled reading that section as a teen, but maybe today’s adolescents are harder-edged? One last question that no other review I’ve read mentions: what happened to the cash buried in the box? Does Jess ever go back for it??? That’s a very odd looked-over detail. Still, a very impressive first book- I can’t stop thinking about it!

Will be trying to get this in as many students’ hands as possible after we finish Hatchet! It’s so good!

i read this in one sitting because i skimmed the F out of it LOL. im not a big fan of survival stories so what did i really expect right? i thought this would have a bit more mystery aspect and was wrong. this was so repetitive, literally every chapter was the same which is like duh since she is in the woods trying to survive but like not fun to read about ya know? I really thought the Before timeline was going to be a lot more fleshed out and interesting but no thats like 3 chapters and then BAM she's in the woods. okay anyways this book was not poorly written by any means and i can definitely see how people who are interested in survival stories would enjoy this! i think after this i am definitely going to leave this genre alone lmao.

Spoiler also the fucking DOG DIES BRO LIKE WHAT THE FUCK

It started off really good. I like the switching between perspectives of the beginning of the story to the present. It made you figure things out slowly. There was only one problem with this book: way to repetitive.

When Jess stops writing about the past and it's just the present, it's the same thing over and over again. She's crying about how she doesn't have food, she gets food, then something bad happens, cuddles Bo, etc.

So I'm taking one star away due to the repeats and also because Bo dies, not cool btw.

If you like Hatchet, this may be the book for you. It’s a bit slow and I didn’t care for the criminal aspect, but it was interesting seeing her survive.

Warning: This book is going to break your heart. It will shatter you, over and over again. But it will also give you hope. It will give you strength. And it will give you courage.
I didn’t think I’d like it as much as I did, as I had recently read a novel by Mindy McGinnis on a similar topic, and she’s one of my most favourite authors. But this story was still quite different, and it was truly outstanding.

A pretty awesome survival story - but the revenge bit at the end felt rushed. The whole book is very fast paced and great (as others have mentioned) for fans of "Hatchet".
Strangely, this book was marked as a romance on the spine, which is wrong. It has no romance and I don't know why the library marked it that way? I was confused when I got the book because from what I knew, it had no romance. I was right - no romance. Just survival.
*contains light swearing*

I loved every heart breaking second of this book! Part of it might be due to the fact that I live in a place where this book could happen right outside my door. But it's also because I felt the burning need of survival rise up in my while I read.

I read The Hatchet in school and this book instantly reminded me of it. However, Marshall has created a world not only of survival but of rebirth. She showed us what it took to become a wild girl and the courage that it takes to live despite the odds.
