1st half was great, second half was too twisty. I actually DNF'ed at 90% and just looked up the ending.

I kept thinking this book was going in a different direction but I'm not sure why...it just always felt like it was. In the end I really liked it, but definitely one I need to talk about to make sure. I got it, I just want to make sure I got it got it.

First Catriona Ward, won't be my last. I think???

I’m not sure how to rate this book because in all honesty I’m not sure I understood the ending. I enjoyed the writing and it was a good mystery. But, as it got more complex near the end I’m afraid I missed some cues because I’m not sure what was real and what wasn’t. Sometimes that happens if I’ve been multitasking while listening, so I may need to go back, but I’m not sure how far.

Will be reading more from Catriona Ward immediately

Super meta book. In this book we have Wilder, Nat and Harper, three friends in the same summer village. Turns out that Nat’s dad is a serial killer and that Nat had been terrorising the community breaking into houses and taking photos with sleeping children holding a knife. We then have books within books, where Wilder has his memoir stolen and college and published by someone else. This person then dies a lot later so Wildet returns to the town to finally write his own story. Turns out though that he’s just a character in someone else’s book and that he actually died when he was still in college. All very story within a story, on many levels

So many people have commented that this book is not a horror, and they are correct that there are no jump scares or monsters, but the premise of the book is much scarier if you enjoy reading and literature. This author truly understand how to create an eerie mood and suspense. While some parts were slow, there was always an edge of anxiety that kept me wondering what will happen next. I greatly enjoyed the book within a book!
