I really don't know who this was written for. Other middle-aged men that can somehow relate to our sodden flannel of a protagonist, who thinks he is much funnier than he is and views women like he's a pubescent boy? Also, who killed the chicken?
What a delight this book was to read. A surprisingly charming and funny whodunnit set in the Loire Valley in France. We follow Richard Ainsworth as he runs a B&B and spends his time watching old movies and generally enjoying his retirement. However, when he finds a bloody handprint in one of the guest bedrooms and no sign of the guest, he is persuaded into the role of amateur sleuth, charged with solving the mystery. The characters are quirky, entertaining, and well drawn and the mystery at the heart of Iain Moore’s first book is such fun. It is your typical cosy mystery fare but that is a plus, never a negative. After all, who doesn't love a cosy mystery? I will admit, I did guess the mystery but that is half the fun when it comes to these. All in all, I really enjoyed my time with Death and Croissants. It is light-hearted with a certain spark and I hope this is the beginning of a long and successful series.

Richard is a middle-aged Englishman who runs a B&B in the fictional Val de Follet in the Loire Valley. Nothing ever happens to Richard, and really that’s the way he likes it.
One day, however, one of his older guests disappears, leaving behind a bloody handprint on the wallpaper. Another guest, the exotic Valérie, persuades a reluctant Richard to join her in investigating the disappearance.
Richard remains a dazed passenger in the case until things become really serious and someone murders Ava Gardner, one of his beloved hens ... and you don’t mess with a fellow’s hens!
This was very slow but not in a good way. The story dragged and the humour only appeared in the second half and even then it was a little laboured at times. I chose to read this because it was likened to the Thursday Murder Club which was superb but I'm afraid this is a pale imitation and I wouldn't choose to read any more in the series.
My thanks to NetGalley for providing a proof in return for an honest review.

Where The Thursday Murder Club was a masterfully woven story with foreshadowing and callbacks, Death and Croissants was several pieces of string laying haphazardly on top of each other

Full of quirky characters with a unique and unexpected ending. It did feel like the characters were going round in circles at times which I personally didn't enjoy but overall I enjoyed listening to the book.
Moderate: Animal death, Murder
