There are books you read and forget and there are books that you read and pieces stick to you like sand on your feet after a visit to the beach. It's been at least 10 years since I last read this book and about 2-3 times a year I get the urge to reread it. Heartbreaking. That's all I know to say about this book. Heart-shattering.
Loved it so much! Broke my heart, but it was healed by the end. Definitely for people who like Sarah Dessen
Review that I posted as a comment in May 2012 because I was a Goodreads noob back then. Now updated to show as an actual review:
An amazing read about things lost and found, broken and repaired, love and friendship. It makes me want my own summer romance. :) An extraordinary book that has wonderful characters that possess you as they take you through the story. Definitely something I would read more than once. :)

This was so touching. I loved the whole concept of it. The author did an amazing job. Twenty Boy Summer really shows how it is to grieve and move on after loving someone you love. This book broke my heart and made me want to cry, but then it filled my heart up with joy. I was glad to read about such remarkable characters like Sam and Matt. I loved Sam. He is an understanding and amazing character. I liked how he was with Anna. What I really liked was that when he and Anna had to say goodbye, he didn't make a big fuss about it. Neither of them did. Still, if i was in that situation, I would miss him terribly! Next is Matt. Ah, Matt. I was really heartbroken when I was reading about how he and Anna got together and then BOOM. Gone in a matter of seconds. Reading about Anna mourning for him, made me want to mourn for him. I really liked how he and Anna were in love with each other and they only got together for a few weeks before he was gone. Talk about heartbreaking!! The memories of Matt and Anna and the love they shared will forever be remembered. The one thing that I didn't like was Frankie wanting to toss out memories of things that Anna and Matt shared. Including throwing her journal in the ocean! I got really mad at that! (I get very attached to things btw) I am still sad for the future that Matt and Anna will never had. It was an amazing book and the feelings and emotions it gave me while reading it will remain in my heart.

It's barely a love story, the main character is dealing with loss and she is trying to overcome it by finding love in someone else. The characters lacked depth, but I wish there was a little more of aunt Jayne, I wanted Anna and her to have another talk about Matt. I felt Anna needed to talk to someone about him to help her with it. Sam seemed lovely, but I wanted Matt back, I thought it seemed too soon, and giving her virginity to him just because Frankie had said she lost hers seemed a little bit irresponsible, and unfair on Sam. The whole booked seemed a little bit impersonal.

I have to say that this book is not at all what I expected. I knew it was a young adult and I read the summary, but the summary doesn't tell you anything. It doesn't express the emotions experienced from losing your first love before you have a definition. It doesn't tell you that Anna loses something before it even begins and that no one else know what she lost. She has to keep this secret. And then she has to move on.
I found the book to be realistic of teenagers without being corny or cheesy. The girls were not perfect, but they were not bad kids. They just wanted to have fun.
The description of Anna and her V-card is spot on. Most girls just want to lose it and then once they've lost it they don't really understand the importance. In society today, a girl's virginity is not something important-it's something to get over with so that you can get to the good stuff. Sarah Ockler portrayed this accurately.
Overall, I was shockingly surprised. I did not expect this book to be good, or to have tears in my eyes for a good portion of the book, but I did. I will definitely be reading some more of Sarah Ockler. I can't believe this was her first novel, I want to see what she did/does after this.

2.5 stars.
This book wasn't what I expected it to be, which I guess is the best thing about it. I thought the plot would be totally different and I sure as hell didn't expect what happened to Matt. Aside from that, the writing was okay but everything felt rather flat and I was very close to DNFing this book before being even half way into it. It has potentially though, I just don't think it was done well.
I think that this could have been a good Dear John/A Walk To Remember type of movie, but as a book something was missing for me. The characters didn't feel like real people and I didn't care too much for them, there was a lot of cliché in terms of when certain things happened, the romance was always rushed and perfect, we didn't actually get to know Sam, and I just kept waiting for some drama to happen. Oh, and the most I felt about Anna was annoyance when she complained that she was plain looking or whatever when she has blonde curls (cut the bullshit, since when is that not considered pretty? give me a different excuse to why she allegedly not attractive), and when she said that this summer changed her entire life (literally two things changed in your life girl, stop being so dramatic!).

bro even though some parts of this book was cliché as fuck, I absolutely loved it. I really wasn’t expecting to really enjoy this but yeah. 🤷🏻♀️
Meh, kinda cute, but I just wasn’t feeling it.
