I really enjoyed the first 30% - 40% of this book. There's plot, they're on the run, there's suspense and mystery, there are other horrors, etc.

Unfortunately, it waters down into our characters just wandering around, killing parasites, and having sex. The fact they're basically on the run from the military is pretty much forgotten until the very end and then it's only for two or three short chapters sadly. There isn't much world building other than what we get in the beginning. I also found quite a number of things unrealistic (like humanity being in this post apocalyptic setting for twenty years or so and abandoned buildings still have supplies, like canned food, just sitting on shelves).

By the last 20%, I pretty much lost interest in anything happening sadly. Interesting idea and it had a wonderful start, but it fell apart as the book went on.

I don't even know what to say, Wyn has my whole heart. I laughed and cried and couldn't put it down. It was so heartwarming and I love a book that doesn't have any unnecessary filler, I devoured every page. Immediately ordered the next

I don't know why I waited so long to read SOUL EATER because I loved it and now I'm kicking myself for waiting. I'm a sucker for a post-apocalyptic romance and this one goes the extra mile by throwing in a bunch of monsters! The world building isn't super deep but there's plenty to set the landscape of the world and how it got to that point. We also see a variety of monsters and that makes me excited for future books in the series.

But what makes this so good is Danny and Wyn the Soul Eater, who were both fantastic characters. The book is told completely from Danny's POV and I enjoyed him as a narrator; he's compassionate and sensitive, but also determined and courageous. He joined the military because he had nowhere else to go after his mom died but he's been struggling with the brutal military lifestyle. I loved watching Danny go from being terrified of Wyn to understanding the truth behind Wyn's purpose, to eventually falling in love. Danny truly saw Wyn for who he was and not just the scary monster that humans believed him to be. Of course, that doesn't mean Wyn isn't a total badass and I loved how completely feral he would get anytime Danny was in danger. Wyn was protective, a touch brooding, and incredibly loyal and I just loved seeing these two together.

While Danny is nervous around Wyn at first, it doesn't take too long for things to heat up between them and the heat stays turned up to max throughout the book! Wyn is pretty similar to a human physically, especially compared to some of the other monsters they encounter, but he has a few surprises for Danny. Together, these two were sexy, sweet, and caring and I can't wait to read more in this series.

Favorite Quotes:

“You were the first human to treat me with something other than contempt or disgust.” My breath caught in my chest, and I went still as Wyn spoke. “I decided to give you a chance at survival.”

“You’re in my blood now, Danny Sullihan. I’ll always be able to find you.”

- - - - -

“You’re all I want, Wyn. You and me.” I swallowed, glad he couldn’t look at me while I said this. “My whole life has felt like I was just kind of drifting. No purpose. No aim. But now… This feels like where I’m meant to be. This feels right.”

“I’ve wanted you from the beginning, my sweet human,” he rasped, his distorted voice so very inhuman and so achingly familiar to me now. “And I will want you until the end.”

I had such a good time with this book and these characters. They're just so precious. It's a monster romance, so obviously there was quite a bit of monster smut in it, but the relationship itself was the main point that drew me to it and made me stay. Because yes, the smut was hot, but it was the feels that made me swoon. Who doesn't want an ancient monster to
carry a sack with a shower gel and deodorant you had to leave behind but really had wanted to take
?  There were some minor things that I was not a fan of (like the use of certain words that I give me the ick) but I choose to ignore them when rating this book because I speed-read this, had so much fun while doing it, loved the characters, and thought that the plot was pretty well-developed and was the driving force of this story, not just an addition between all the smut scenes.
So, a completely honest rating would be 4,75, but I still give it 5 stars.

Loving this series so far. I’m on the second book of the series and I appreciate that each book isn’t a retread of the previous with different characters. Each of the humans and monsters have distinct personalities, wants, and desires. The spice level is a solid five.

I really enjoy the character of Wyn, The Soul Eater. He is a difficult and complicated character but so fun to watch develop and the relationship with Danny is both endearing and sexy.

The only complaint that I have is that we never have a POV from the monsters, at least not in the first two books.
