The text only gets 3 stars but the presentation earns an extra one.

Interesting and quirky - just fell flat towards the end.

I wish there was more meat to this story, but otherwise it was a neat experimental storytelling device

I loved City on Fire so I was really looking forward to this. The two books are both similar and completely different. Hallberg told two family sagas in two very different formats (one long and sprawling, one short and spare) to similar effect. I adored the format of Field Guide . It told a common story in an uncommon way. It forced you to think through the narrative, leaving gaps for you to fill in on your own and yet the narrative was cohesive, the characters well-developed. Fantastic concept, well-executed.

It was interesting to read a book accompanied with illustrations. I liked how the selected pictures fitted the short text in each page. Some where more moving than others. You will get a smile from this reading experience, it might even warm your heart.

reflective fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes

The books premise is very fun, and I adore unconventional writing styles. However, the plot was a bit basic and not as developed as I had hoped, though I suppose that comes with the style. A good enough book for what it was meant to be.

It's like a modern As I Lay Dying. This is nice idea and a high degree of difficulty which the author pulls off. However, it was just too pretentious both the author and the people involved. I'm fine with the loose plot and looser resolution. The entries' and pictures really worked. But too self-assured.

It was an interesting concept, but lacking a bit in execution.
