this series has me in an absolute chokehold. i saw a number of disappointed reviews about the third installment, but i still loved it.
the action is fast paced and exciting, and romance is subtle but powerfully written. this is how i want a fantasy series to be. (i guess the delineation is that this is fantasy, and not romantasy. i prefer the former)
helene and laia are at the forefront in this story, and i loved it. their characters are just rich and well written, they’re so strong in light of the hell that sabaa tahir puts them through.
the nightbringer is what an antagonist should be: big, bad, and yet bringing out a sense of sympathy and humanity in you. you cannot help but feel for him.
and the twists in this one? very good. definitely had my eye on one of them, but the other had me rereading the sentence reveal as it was so effortlessly slid in.
knocked this down half a star (and rounded down) because i felt that elias’ chapters were a bit slow and repetitive. i just wanted to get back to the blood shrike and the lioness’ daughter.
i am both excited and sad to get into the last book of the series.

A somewhat weaker entry in the series, largely because it had a lot of plot points to cover and not as much of the characterization that made the other books so good. It waxes and wanes in a way that made it long to get through, but once you get beyond certain points (thankfully one at the end of the book) it goes quickly. I still want to know what happens next, which is a good sign.

Oh my lanta. Such an intense book. Everything that could go wrong/can go wrong. Deep character turmoil. Development. Plot. World Building. So much happened in this book and I loved exploring it. I loved that we saw the characters working through despair and pain and seeing it and feeling it. So well done. Can't wait to get my hands on the last book.
