Really unique book. There is mysticism/spirituality, along with a murder mystery combined with fantasy. The main character is a "Death Eater" and can save people (but only once) on the verge of dying. Her cousin is a "scryer" and can see the future. Her grandmother is a witch. And yes, it takes place in present time.
It's hard to describe, but the story is actually engrossing and while not believable at all, the basic mystery is a good one.
Definitely recommend.

If my understanding is correct, this is the authors toe-dip into adult novels. The story did have some adult themes, but still felt very "youth" while reading.

This book was a relatively enjoyable folkish/lightly fantastical murder mystery. The murder mystery is the main plot and all of the other elements are only contextual, so know that you're not getting much folklore or fantasy if you read reviews before deciding to dive into the story.

It looks like some room was left at the end for a series spin-up or at least a sequel, and I hope the author eventually goes that route. I'd be interested in reading Rook's story from his perspective and seeing if/how his relationship with Weatherly grows/changes.

Mystical and evocative. And this gorgeous cover captures it perfectly. Deep in Appalachia, Weatherly Wilder lives an extraordinary life as a Death Talker, someone who can convince death to leave the body it's trying to take, but only once per person. After it enters her body, she coughs it out into a container. It's a thick black mucus that becomes Sin Eaters Oil. This precious liquid can be used for good or evil, but its use is controlled by Weatherly's harrigan of a grandmother. After her best friend and cousin is killed by a car, she goes on a quest to find the murderer, a murderer who is trying to implicate Weatherly. While the story may seem to meander, the author absolutely has it under control through to the beautiful ending that ties it all together. Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

In the Hour of Crows is an excellent addition to the southern gothic genre-- it's got mystery, a little tiny bit of romance, lots of magic, and of course, crows.

I wish there had been more interaction between Weatherly and Rook, but all-in-all, I really enjoyed this book!
