Breathtaking...

This story is a fresh take on the Greek tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice and would be an excellent teaching tool in an ancient Greek literature unit in high school. I think the way the story is told would help to expose teens to alternative types of prose, and maybe help them look on Greek literature, not with musty skepticism, but with new interest that the protagonists of old are just like them.

This is a beautifully written re-telling of The Orpheus and Eurydice myth that modernizes the tale without losing the classic quality of the myth or becoming predictable. Almond weaves a wonderful tale of love in an innovative way by introducing a new character into the tale. This character narrates their love story and adds a voice of reason needed in the story. It was breath taking, unique, and timeless. I would definitely recommend this book to those who love a good love story, are interested in Greek mythology, and enjoy a good read from start to finish.

I have to give this book 4 stars because it really is beautiful art. Almond is very good at the metaphorical story. I'm just not in the mood for a sad tale of something beautiful being adored, worshipped, then misunderstood, maligned, and destroyed.

Ok so I love Hadestown so I thought a book would be great. Sadly that is not the case, because I have found it aggravating when there is lyrics/songs in books because it is hard to really know the beat and most people skip them. The story was what I expect though some parts I was confused. I am just happy to be finished with it

Apparently I like retellings of the Orpheus myth, because I liked this almost as much as All Our Pretty Songs. The stories are similar in tone and feeling, but the setting is much different.
