overall a good book, and one i would recommend! def more thriller than horror for me, not sure if i was “scared” or “grossed out” once. it felt more like a mystery to me than anything. i really appreciated how all the characters connected and had their own relationships/history with each other! this wasn’t an ensemble, but sometimes felt like it! however sometimes it was a bit overwhelming to keep track of everyone, and this is coming from someone who reads Game of Thrones.

i really enjoyed the way Tudor ended each chapter, with a cliffhanger! i always was engaged and wanted to read more, and would get so excited when i realized i was nearing the end of the chapter.

now my complaints. the narrator was heinously annoying. like my God, I don’t think I’ve ever read from a more judgmental person! same with her daughter. their attitude and personality was so atrocious i was almost rooting against them! it felt as though the author was bullied as a child and was now taking it out on her characters. there’s nothing i hate more then the mean girl trope, and this book ran with it.

i kept thinking we would have flashbacks to the 1500s or that there would be a mystery surrounding that, which is what really drew me to the book in the first place. i was thinking The Witch (movie) vibes and did not get that unfortunately.

additionally, i guessed the plot twist about 30% in. this is to no fault of the author, however it was so glaringly obvious i wonder how anyone could be shocked.

if it weren’t for the lack of shock towards the end and the annoying characters, this would have probably been a 5.

I’m disappointed because I liked the premise and this book had great reviews but I was ultimately let down. Here are my thoughts:
-I wanted to read about the burning girls in the title but this book wasn’t about them. They just existed.
-I did not like the writing. It felt very, “How do you do, fellow kids? Hey, I know who the killers and my chemical romance are! And Snapchat!” But then some of it sounded dated, like calling a “goth” “vampirina”… maybe British children say that and I just don’t relate???
-For the characters, there isn’t a single likable one. And really, that’s normally fine because unlikable characters can be interesting, but they were also boring. I didn’t care for them and therefore did not care about what happened to them, so there is no suspense. I was bored.
-It felt a little racist?? Why are the only black people in the book bad people??
-the villains were evil for no reason, lazy.
-I would not recommend this book.

"All the prayers in my repertoire cannot quite stop the things that prey upon my mind from crawling out of their dark corners, looking to feast."

4 stars - barely 4... Some holes in the plot. But kept me interested. The description of the book is a little misleading to what the book actually ends up being about.

A little slow to start, but I just stayed up well past bedtime and I was definitely surprised by the end. So I definitely recommend if you love a good, just creepy enough, thriller!

This started a bit slow but picked up!! The ending surprised me which I don’t always get in thrillers!

Wow, this was good, despite some editor errors. The back cover how it labels Jack as "his" when Jack was actually a woman.

I read this with Halloween approaching and it was a good fit as it was spooky. Full of mysteries, deceit and vengeance and a mixing of some gore.
